The legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has lavished praise on Indian star all-rounder Shardul Thakur who performed exceptionally well in England vs India 4th Test match at Kennington Oval, London.
Notably, with the joint team effort, India managed to earn a victory at the Oval after 50 long years by defeating England by the Big margin of 157 runs. Each and every player from the Indian line-up gave a contribution which led to India winning the historic Test match.
India found several positives in this match the only negative was the poor form of Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. Meanwhile, the biggest positive many believe was the all-round performance of Shardul Thakur.
Shardul Thakur had already shown that he has amazing batting capability by scoring good runs in the Gabba Test against Australia. Meanwhile, he now has scored two back-to-back fifties against England which has only enhanced his reputation as a complete all-round package. The former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar was highly impressed with the batting of Shardul Thakur and lauded him for showcasing top-notch shots while batting.
“Look, at the moment… everything he touches is turning into gold. I mean, some of the shots he played were glorious… the thumping six, the straight drive. They were absolutely delightful to watch. And the confidence with which he batted, you could see. And that was most impressive about him,” Gavaskar said on Sony Sports Network.
“To deceive a batsman with that kind of delivery takes something special”: Sunil Gavaskar on Shardul Thakur
Further, Gavaskar went on to praise Shardul Thakur for his amazing bowling technique. Notably, Shardul was able to dismiss Ollie Pope who was batting at the score of 81 in the first innings. Meanwhile, in the second innings, he dismissed Rory Burns and the best batter of England Joe Root.
“In England particularly, when the ball is moving around, he bowled an absolute beauty of a delivery. It pitched and just left the left-handed Rory Burns, who was batting well. To deceive a batsman with that kind of delivery takes something special and that’s what he produced. And then, of course, there was getting Joe Root out. He’s got that ball which comes in and Root, looking to run the ball down point, got that inside edge because the ball had nipped back in,” Gavaskar added.
Sunil Gavaskar further pinpointed that India has found the player they always needed at the no.8 spot in overseas conditions.
“He’s contributing with the bat, he’s contributing with the ball. India have found just the player they need for the team at No. 8, definitely in England and perhaps in South Africa as well.”
