Former Indian keeper-batter Shreevats Goswami was divided on whether Gautam Gambhir should continue as the head coach of the India National Cricket Team or whether the BCCI should keep trusting Gambhir for the future. Under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir, the Indian cricket team so far has experienced both highs and lows across the formats.
While they were unstoppable in the Twenty20 format, winning the 2026 T20 World Cup and the Asia Cup, there were new lows in the Tests at the same time. Additionally, Gautam Gambhir sometimes took an attacking approach in media briefings to explain his way of coaching. In terms of winning the ICC trophies and dominating the shortest format of the game, the former India opener has been good for India.
Shreevats Goswami makes a massive prediction on Gautam Gambhir
But the overall report card can present a not-very-calming reality for the coach, at least the former cricketer thought so. Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Shreevats Goswami was interviewed on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, where he was asked to assess the future of Gautam Gambhir as the Indian cricket team head coach.
Goswami had a gut feeling that the 2027 ODI World Cup could be Gambhir's last World Cup as India's Test coach. BCCI appointed him as the head coach of the national cricket team across the formats, soon after India's successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, claiming their second-ever T20I championship. Gambhir came into power, replacing Rahul Dravid.
2027 World Cup to mark Gautam Gambhir's final stint as India head coach?
Speaking on the podcast, Shreevats Goswami stated that there was too much talk around the 2027 World Cup, as it could mark the final runs of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. But will BCCI allow Gambhir to continue? The former cricketer predicted that alongside Virat and Rohit, the upcoming World Cup could also mark the end of Gambhir's stint as Team India coach.
"It'll be interesting to see how long Gambhir continues. Everyone is talking about next year's World Cup being Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's last. It could be Gambhir's last World Cup as well as a coach. He has done well in terms of ICC titles. But he is a bit stern and makes strong comments in press conferences," Goswami stated.
Amid the increasing number of games through a single calendar year, across all three formats of the game, there are multiple national cricket boards that have adopted the concept of multiple coaches to keep balance between the teams based on the nature of the formats.
Shreevats Goswami on BCCI's head coach appointment policy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to apply the concept. Shreevats Goswami mentioned that BCCI could stick with the traditional one-coach formula to continue fetching success at the top end of the game.
"India doesn't have the culture of two coaches, so I don't know how the players will take that, especially those coming up. You need one coach to have conversations with the players and keep the same energy flowing," Shreevats Goswami added.
