The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has dropped a bombshell by announcing that the selectors have dropped Shubman Gill from India’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series as well as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 next year.
There were already reports that the national selectors were not happy with Shubman Gill’s performance in the shortest format of the game, and now they took the massive call to show the door to the team’s Test and ODI captain for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Selectors show no mercy as Shubman Gill left out of ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad
Axar Patel has been reinstated as India’s vice-captain, while the rest of the squad is expected for both the T20I series against New Zealand and the showpiece event. Gill’s dropping meant that Sanju Samson will return as India’s opener, while Ishan Kishan was rewarded highly for his domestic show.

Ishan replaced Gill in India’s T20I squad after spending almost two years on the sidelines on the back of strong performances for Jharkhand in the domestic cricket. Gill’s consistent poor form forced the selectors to make the tough call. They had brought him back as the vice-captain in the Asia Cup 2026.
After the moderate Asia Cup 2025, the Punjab lad registered scores of 37 not out, 5, 15, 46, 29 not out, 4, 0, and 8, and these numbers were not enough to retain his place in the squad for the mega event. Following the announcement, fans have been hailing the selector and Suryakumar’s bold call.
Here's how fans react to Shubman Gill's dropping:
Shubman Gill has been axed, which makes sense, but personally I would have brought Jaiswal in ahead of Ishan Kishan.

Jitesh Sharma has also been let go, in favour of Rinku Singh, which means Sanju Samson will start for India as opener. https://t.co/r7lH6fh84G
Played Asia Cup in the tough pitches of Dubai and Australia and score 214 in 10 matches with strike rate of 128 still got dropped when it's time to play again statpadd innings in flat pitches of India. 💔

Leaving out Shubman Gill is a tough pill for many to swallow, but the numbers don't lie.

In a format where every ball counts, India is opting for high-octane openers who fit the modern template.
Deserving talent like Ishan and Sanju getting their due. 🇮🇳⚡@BCCI@ICC#cricket
Some media organisations did an extremely good PR to keep Shubman Gill in the squad citing the need of an anchor, dropping him down kicking out Dube etc.

Now, the same organisation/people are taking the credit and saying performance matters etc.
Man, at least stick your neck…

This is what Devajit Saikia had to say when SKY was completing his answer on lack of runs.
Shubman Gill was out of runs, dropped.
SKY woefully out of form and runs but cracks a joke and two, survives.
At just 26, Shubman Gill has failed to secure a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad.
