Sanju Samson again stood tall when the team required him the most. In the Final of the T20 World Cup on March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the opener played a historic knock before departing. Indian cricket fans absolutely love the way Samson tackled the New Zealand bowlers.

Though he missed a century for only 11 runs. The right-handed batter lost his wicket for 89 runs in 46 balls. He smashed five fours and eight maximums to make the innings massively impactful.

According to stats by Cricbuzz, Samson recorded a total of 24 sixes in a T20I series, the second most by any batter among the full member teams. On the first ball of the 15th over of the first innings, New Zealand pace bowling all-rounder James Neesham took Samson’s wicket with the support of the substitute fielder Cole McConchie. When the batter departed, India was on 203 runs.

During the knock, Samson stitched two crucial partnerships- first with his opening partner Abhishek Sharma, and then with the number three batter Ishan Kishan. The pair of Sharma and Samson collected 98 runs off 43 balls. And with Ishan, the partnership was 105(48).

In the Final of the T20 World Cup 2026, the defending champion made history at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. For the seventh time in the history of the Men’s T20 Internationals, the team registered 250-plus runs in an innings, which is the highest among all the teams in the format.

Today (March 8, 2026), the Suryakumar Yadav-led team put 255 runs in 20 overs, losing 5 wickets, despite some quick departures in the middle overs. On an individual basis, Sanju Samson created a record as well. According to stats, the opener’s 89 is the highest individual score in a T20 WC final, surpassing 85* and 85 by Marlon Samuels and Kane Williamson in 2016 and 2021, respectively.
