A controversy emerged in Indian politics when a Congress politician used body-shaming remarks towards the Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. However, rivals BJP came up with a stunning reply to defend the Indian captain.

Rohit Sharma is currently leading India in the ongoing Champions Trophy. Under his leadership, India have won all three matches of the group stage and topped their group. They will now face Australia in the semi-finals.

Congress politician calls Rohit Sharma "fat", "unimpressive"

Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed took to social media to call Rohit Sharma "fat for a sportsman". She even termed Rohit as the "most unimpressive captain" in India's history.

“Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!" Shama Mohamed posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Although she deleted her post after severe backlash, it had received plenty of attention on social media. Indian cricket fans were quick to react and defended their captain. The users also advised Shama to stay away from cricket and just concentrate on politics.

BJP gives a strong reply

Not just the users, the rival party BJP also reacted to this post and decided to stand firm for the Indian captain. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla attacked Congress for disrespecting Rohit Sharma and the Indian cricket team.

"Those who have lost 90 elections under the captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling the captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive! I guess 6 ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive but winning the T20 World Cup isn’t! Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain by the way!" Poonawalla replied to Congress.

“While opposing India, its institutions, and its armed forces – while repeatedly saying they are against the Indian state – Congress has now turned against the Indian team as well," he added.

Poonawalla further called out Congress for body-shaming remarks on Rohit and recalled his achievements as a cricketer and a captain. He lashed out at Congress for opposing the country, its institutions, and now the cricket captain as well.

“Take care of your own ducks and your own captain. There isn’t even a situation to judge what is impressive or unimpressive there. And yet, the person under whom we have won 100 out of 140 matches, and under whose captaincy we won the T20 World Cup, is being called unimpressive," the BJP politician remarked.

"This reflects Congress’s core mindset. They oppose India, its institutions, and any success or achievement of the country. That’s why, when India defeated Pakistan and New Zealand, the Congress party was furious and started spewing venom against the nation," he added.

Shama Mohamed defends her comments

After facing backlash, Shama Mohamed defended her comment by questioning some of the decisions of Rohit Sharma which cost the team.

“Didn’t he move KL Rahul to bat at number 3 at the MCG Test & put himself at number 1 which backfired totally! Wasn’t that a selfish move? Because of that, Shubman Gill was out of the XI," she argued.

“Didn’t we lose the last World Cup which took place in Ahmedabad? I have compared him to our previous captains," she questioned.

Rohit Sharma's incredible captaincy records

Rohit Sharma has scored 76 runs in 3 matches at an average of 25.33 and a strike rate of 111.76. He has looked to score runs quickly in the powerplay which has been his template over the last few years in ODIs.

Under Rohit, India has achieved tremendous success, especially in white-ball cricket. He led India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title win and also played a key role in the victory by becoming the second-highest run-getter of the tournament.

He also has an impeccable record as a captain of India. Rohit has led India in 140 international games so far across all the formats. The Men in Blue won 101 matches at an impressive win percentage of 72.14.

Apart from international cricket, he is also the joint-most successful captain in the history of the IPL with five titles to his name while leading Mumbai Indians.
