Financial penalty demanded by ICC on Shubman Gill-Ben Stokes

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan criticized Indian skipper Shubman Gill and England captain Ben Stokes for the slow over-rate during the third Test of the five-match series at Lord's. Vaughan stated that fines do little to change slow over-rates because players are wealthy and can easily afford them.
India and England are currently playing the third Test, with the series evenly poised at 1-1. A total of 22 overs were lost across the first two days. India managed to bowl 83 overs on Day 1, while both sides combined for just 75 overs on Day 2. They fell 15 short of the mandated 90 overs for the second day’s play.
Don’t Think the Cash Is Going to Affect Them - Michael Vaughan on Shubman Gill-Ben Stokes
Michael Vaughan shared his take on the slow over-rate issue after Day 2 of the third Test. Speaking to Isa Guha on BBC Sport, the former England captain said that fines are ineffective. He added that completing 90 overs each day is essential for Test cricket.
“I don’t think fines work. I think these lads are quite rich,” said Vaughan to the BBC Sports with a laugh.
“I don’t think the cash is going to affect them. Been a problem for Test match cricket for a while. I know it’s hot. I know we’ve had a few injuries, but when we get to the fifth day, we have to bowl the 90 overs,” he added.
“I have no idea why on days one, two, three, and four, we can see the game played at a snail’s pace. Surely the game moves on by saying on day one there’s 90 overs. Guess what we’re going to do? We’re going to bowl 90 overs on day two exactly the same,” said Vaughan.
I Would Guarantee That Would Improve the Pace - Michael Vaughan
Michael Vaughan emphasized that completing the full quota of 90 overs each day should be non-negotiable in Test cricket. He pointed out that on the fifth day, the game moves faster with fewer breaks and delays. Vaughan added that the rule should be enforced strictly across all five days.
“You watch on day five when the players, the umpires know that 90 overs have to be bowled. They’ll be running around. There won’t be as many drinks breaks, there won’t be as many delays because they know that 90 overs have to be bowled. So I’d make it very, very simple. You have to bowl the 90 overs. I would guarantee that would improve the pace,” Vaughan added.
Shubman Gill-led India Lose Three Wickets on Day 2 After Restricting England to 387
Shubman Gill-led India ended Day 2 of the third Test at Lord’s on 145 for 3 in response to England’s first-innings total of 387. The visitors, led by Shubman Gill, got off to a disappointing start as Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 13 by Jofra Archer in the second over of the innings.
Karun Nair scored 40 runs off 62 balls, but he was sent back by England skipper Ben Stokes. Shubman Gill, who had scored a double century and a hundred in the previous Test, was dismissed for just 16 by Chris Woakes.
At stumps, KL Rahul (53*) and Rishabh Pant (19*) were unbeaten at the crease. India still trails by 242 runs heading into a crucial Day 3. England’s bowlers, including Archer and Shoaib Bashir, are expected to pose a tough challenge.
