The Australian team, led by Pat Cummins, dominated Day 2 of the third Test match against the Indian team in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series. Australia has managed to post a 400+ total against India for the first time in the last three Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at home.

Australia resumed their first innings on 28-0 at the Gabba in Brisbane on Sunday, December 15. The home team lost openers Usman Khawaja (21) and Nathan McSweeney (9) early in the first session. Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets, while Nitish Kumar Reddy dismissed Marnus Labuschagne (12).

However, Steve Smith and Travis Head added 241 runs for the fourth wicket. Both batters scored centuries and helped Australia reach 300. However, Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets with the second new ball. He first removed Smith, followed by Mitchell Marsh and Head, leaving Australia at 327/6.

Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey played a crucial role in helping Australia reach 405/7 at the stumps on Day 2. Carey scored 45 runs off 47 balls, while Mitchell Starc remained unbeaten on 7. This is the first time Australia has posted over 400 in an innings since the opening Test against Pakistan last December.

Australia has posted a total of over 400 in an innings for the first time in 11 Tests across three home series against India. This is the first instance of Australia scoring 400+ in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The last instance was in 2015 when the Australia team scored 572/7 dec at the SCG.

Speaking after the Day 2 play, Travis Head said that it was special to score a century in the match. He credited the top-order for their resilience against the new ball, adding that they made his job easier.

"Pretty special to do this after that ton at the Adelaide Oval. It's all about being as positive as I can, I thought that I had to spend some time in the middle, credit to the top-3 guys for having stuck out against the new ball, it made my task easier and I could play my shots, I felt pretty positive against the new ball, but it was fun to be aggressive," Head said.
