Murphy Su’a, a former Black Caps bowler, has disclosed a targeted racial incident from the 1990s involving a senior player.

Su’a claims he was the target of a racist remark from a senior member of the team after Black Caps legend Ross Taylor shared his own experience of discrimination within the Black Caps organization.

“I was very upset. Even though I was pretty upset about it, nothing was ever done.”

The Samoan-New Zealander claims that management covered up the incident by claiming that the player did not intend it.
“They said that the emotion of the occasion was to blame. But it was not the emotion of the moment for me. You cannot communicate to people and categories them in the same manner that individual did, no matter what you do.”

He has not shown regret for it and likely does not believe he has done anything wrong.

Su’a claims that he was even accused of contributing to the incident.

“They blamed me for my attitude. But it wasn’t my attitude. When someone calls you a derogatory comment about where you come from, why wouldn’t you get upset and defend yourself?”

New Zealand Cricket spokesperson Richard Boock offered sympathy to Murphy Su’a:

Richard Boock, a spokesman for New Zealand Cricket, expressed condolence to Su’a.

“I believe that type of behavior got worse the further back in time you went. Since then, things have significantly improved,” as Ross himself has stated.
Since the 1990s, the governing body, according to Boock, has undergone restructuring.

“Before the days of the Hood Report, which turned the group into a professional organization, the original NZCC was administered by a chairman and a secretary when Murphy began playing international cricket. There was no players’ association at the time, and the players had very little support and protection.”

The left-arm seamer played 13 tests and 12 one-days for the Black Caps between 1992 and 1995.
