Cricket Australia’s chairman, Lachlan Henderson, stepped down on Sunday due to professional commitments. Former New South Wales premier Mike Baird is expected to succeed Henderson as Cricket Australia’s fourth chair in less than 18 months. Henderson announced his resignation early next year, and Mike Baird will take over in February.

Henderson was appointed chair earlier this year, following the resignation of Earl Eddings in October 2021. However, Henderson will continue to serve on the board in a separate capacity. He will be returning to his hometown of Perth, which was one of the reasons he resigned from his position.

It Difficult To Devote The Time Required As Chair – Lachlan Henderson

Henderson stated that he is unable to devote ample time to the top job due to his recent appointment as CEO of HBF, a health insurance provider in Perth.

“The new role I’ve taken in my home city Perth will make it difficult to devote the time required as Chair, so I have decided this is the right time to hand over the role,” Henderson was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Lachlan Has Made A Great Contribution As Chair – Mike Baird

Mike Baird, Lachlan’s successor, is no stranger to high-profile positions, having previously served as state premier, making him one of the most prominent chairs in Cricket Australia’s history. Baird praised the departing chair for his services to Australian cricket and expressed interest in working with him.

“Lachlan has made a great contribution as Chair and I’m delighted he will continue to provide his considerable business and cricket expertise on the CA Board,” Mike Baird said in an official statement to the CA.

“It is an honor to take such an important role in Australian cricket at a time when so much exciting work is being done to grow our national sport and take it forward. I’m pleased to have the chance to work even more closely with CEO Nick Hockley and his team and all those working across Australian cricket,” he added.

The 54-year-old Baird was NSW premier from 2014 to 2017 and will join the CA board in 2020. Baird will take over at a crucial time for the game in Australia, with further broadcast rights and a new MoU currently being negotiated.
