Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is all set to become the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This claim was made by the former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali on his YouTube channel.

Ali has confidently shared this prediction, stating that the BCCI Secretary and son of the Indian Home Minister Amit Shah is on track to assume the top position at the ICC in November 2024.

Jay Shah will be the ICC Chairman soon: Basit Ali

Shah's influential role as BCCI Secretary makes him one of the favorites to become the next ICC chairman. The BCCI is the ICC's most powerful full-member nation, which also gives Shah an edge over other candidates, but there is no official comment regarding his candidacy for the ICC chairmanship.

However, Basit Ali is confident that Shah will take over as ICC chairman soon. Ali said in a short video on his YouTube channel: “Let me give you breaking news: In the coming few months, Jay Shah will be the ICC Chairman.”

Well, the current ICC Chairman, Greg Barclay, is likely to seek another term, which can add complexity to the race for the top position in the governing body. Earlier reports from the PTI news agency highlighted the keen interest within the ICC regarding Shah's possible takeover as the chairman of the body.

The ICC source was quoted as saying by PTI: “It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling-off period in the Indian Board starts in 2025 as per the constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can't complete his third term of two years, from December 2024 to December 2026. There is a school of thought that what if ICC's chairmanship term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, so the cumulative term can remain six years?”

ICC playing with the Pakistanis: Basit Ali

Meanwhile, Basit urged the ICC to come up with a solution as there are reports that the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played under a hybrid model since the Indian government is refusing to send the team to Pakistan for the mega event.

Ali said that if this time also ICC doesn’t take proper action, then nobody can save the ICC from dying as everyone is zero without India versus Pakistan matches. He also claimed that the ICC is playing with the Pakistanis by passing the budget for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Basit Ali said on his YouTube channel: “This is the last chance for the ICC to make a formula. This happens in every ICC event. In Pakistan, the Champions Trophy is taking place after many years. And there is a lot of noise. Everyone is happy that the budget has been passed. But I feel that the ICC is playing now. Playing with the Pakistanis. If the ICC closes its eyes this time, then cricket will be destroyed. ICC will have to find a solution to this.”
