PC: X

Team India off-spinner Washington Sundar was unhappy with the on-field umpire decisions on Day 3 (Sunday, October 12) of the second and final Test match against the West Indies. Usually calm on the field, Sundar was seen engaging in an animated discussion with Richard Illingworth regarding umpire calls.

The young cricketer failed to pick up any wickets in the West Indies' first innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Washington bagged his first wicket by dismissing Alick Athanaze with a peach of a delivery just before the tea break on the third day’s play. However, a few LBW calls went in John Campbell’s favour.

In the 19th over, Sundar trapped Campbell on the pad while the batter lunged forward to defend. Replays showed the ball hit the pad first and was going on to hit the middle stump, but the impact was deemed just outside off and an umpire’s call saved the batter.

A few overs later, Sundar once again had Campbell trapped in front, the ball-tracking again showing the impact marginally outside off. As Campbell survived for the second time, Sundar exchanged words with on-field umpire Richard Illingworth, who responded with a calm smile.

John Campbell and Shai Hope Attack Washington Sundar with Positive Cricket

In the West Indies’ second innings, Mohammed Siraj struck early by dismissing Tagenarine Chanderpaul for 10, with Shubman Gill taking a sharp catch at short mid-wicket.

John Campbell and Alick Athanaze tried to steady the innings, but Washington Sundar broke the stand. Sundar removed Athanaze for 7 as the ball sharply turned past his bat and hit off stump.

However, Campbell and Shai Hope added over 75 runs for the third wicket. Campbell reached a half-century, the first by a West Indies batter in the series.

At the time of writing, Roston Chase’s side were 114/2 after 32 overs, with Campbell (64) and Hope (33) at the crease. West Indies were trailing India by 157 runs with seven wickets in hand.

Washington Sundar Went Wicketless in West Indies' First Innings

Earlier in the day, India put the West Indies under serious pressure, dismissing them for 248 in their first innings. Kuldeep Yadav was the standout performer, claiming a five-wicket haul in 26.5 overs for just 82 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj contributed one wicket each. India’s bowlers dominated throughout the innings.

Skipper Shubman Gill opted to enforce the follow-on. The West Indies have shown a much-improved batting display, determined to erase the deficit imposed by the hosts.

Their immediate target is to reduce the gap, rebuild confidence, and avoid slipping into a second consecutive innings defeat, while India look to maintain their grip on the match.
