Game over for Mohsin Naqvi as BCCI plots impeachment of ACC President over Asia Cup trophy row
PC: X

Recent reports suggest that the BCCI has pushed for the impeachment of Mohsin Naqvi from his role as the President of the Asian Cricket Council. News18 reported that India will be explicitly calling for the removal of Mohsin Naqvi.

The India vs Pakistan game marked India as the victorious side; however, they had an urge to prevent Mohsin Naqvi from handing them the ICC trophy, as they asked the ECB vice-president to hand over the trophy. Naqvi, infuriated and insulted, took the cup out of the field and did not hand it over to the champions.

He has received immense criticism from several boards, as well as the BCCI, for such an act, which harmed the esteem of both the ACC and the ICC. The Pakistani minister might be facing serious consequences for his actions.

BCCI to push for impeachment of ACC Chief Mohsin Naqvi

The most recent development from the BCCI intended to push for the impeachment of Mohsin Naqvi from his role as the President of the Asian Cricket Council. This is followed by a series of serious allegations laid upon the Pakistani administrator.

The allegations against him are based on breaching the sporting protocols, and several questions around his impartiality have also surfaced after his conduct in the Asia Cup final. India will explicitly call for Naqvi's removal, asserting that he violated his core responsibilities as the head of a supervisory organization, the ACC.

India has raised concerns that the act conducted by Naqvi in the Asia Cup final is not only derogatory to the integrity of the ACC tournaments but also breaches the principles of neutrality and fair conduct in the game of cricket.

Naqvi's dual role creates an inherent conflict of interest, states India

The report has also mentioned that India is firm in their position, which finds Naqvi's dual role as the PCB Chief as well as the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council against an inherent conflict of interest. This contradicts the impartiality of governance, which is required for ACC.

Top government sources reveal that India plans to report the alleged trophy theft to UAE authorities and insists that Naqvi’s conduct warrants an official probe. This behaviour not only harmed the reputation of the winning team but also set a dangerous precedent of politicised discrimination.

This might also harm the relationship between the ACC and the broadcasters, sponsors, and also the broader image of cricket as a sport above politics.

India's position as the largest financial contributor to ACC poses a major challenge to Mohsin Naqvi

The BCCI is the largest financial contributor within the Asian Cricket Council, along with potentially other neutral cricket boards that intend to argue that Mohsin Naqvi has lost moral authority to lead the Asian council.

They have proposed that a vote of no-confidence or an impeachment motion is necessary to restore credibility and maintain the integrity of cricket administration in Asia.

As per the reports, the trophy is currently at the Emirates Cricket Board headquarters in Abu Dhabi. The UAE cricket authorities intend to return it to the Indian team as soon as possible.
