Gautam Gambhir's appointment as Team India's head coach looks like a mere formality now. According to reports, it is just a matter of time before the BCCI announces him as Team India's new head coach.
India do not have a permanent head coach since the conclusion of the T20 World Cup last week. The tournament brought an end to Rahul Dravid's tenure as the coach of the team. Dravid's original contract had ended last year itself after the ODI World Cup. However, the BCCI had managed to convince him to accept an extension.
Last month, Gautam Gambhir as well as former India cricketer WV Raman had interviewed for the post. The former India opener was the front-runner even before the interview. And once he formally applied for the post, it became very clear that he would replace Dravid as the new coach of the team.
And Gambhir's recent activity is another big indication that he is set to take charge of the Indian team soon. According to a report in Times Now, the legendary cricketer recently visited Eden Gardens in Kolkata to shoot an official farewell video for Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir joined KKR this year as their mentor and guided them to their third IPL title and first since he had led them to the second title way back in 2014.
"It was a low-key affair, but Gambhir wanted to bid goodbye to his fans with a message and that is why they shot a video at the Eden," a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official told the news outlet. The official also confirmed that the video was shot by Gambhir's personal team and not by KKR as the former cricketer wanted to bid goodbye to the fans with a special personal message.
I would love to coach the Indian team: Gautam Gambhir
Last month, Gautam Gambhir had expressed his desire to serve the Team as the head coach. Speaking at an event in Abu Dhabi, he had said:
"Look, I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour."
Gambhir is yet to coach a state or national team but has enhanced his reputation thanks to his stint in the IPL. Before joining KKR this year, he had served as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in the previous two seasons, and the franchise qualified for the playoffs in both seasons.
