Is Gautam Gambhir disappointed with the horrible form of the T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav in international cricket? The India National Cricket Team head coach has finally opened up on this matter and discussed the form of the 35-year-old.
Gautam Gambhir bluntly said that poor form of Suryakumar Yadav is not the cause of concern in the Indian camp at the moment because a player is bound to fail while playing ultra-aggressive cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav steers India to Asia Cup 2025 win
Recently, Suryakumar Yadav won his first major title as the India T20I skipper as he guided the team to the Asia Cup 2025 triumph in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
India remained unbeaten throughout the competition and humiliated the Pakistan National Cricket Team three consecutive times to clinch the Asia Cup trophy, which they are yet to receive as the ACC 'Thief' Mohsin Naqvi stole it and ran away from the ground.
Although India managed to win the competition comprehensively, the skipper Suryakumar Yadav faced heavy criticism for his poor form. The right-handed batter registered scores of 7*, 47*, 0, 5, 12, and 1 across the matches in the Asia Cup 2025.
Many called for his sacking, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took no action and retained him as leader for the subsequent Australia tour.
Honestly, Surya's batting form doesn't concern me - Gautam Gambhir
Talking about Suryakumar Yadav, Gautam Gambhir said that he can easily avoid the criticism by playing slow knocks, but he won't do it as he will continue to play ultra-aggressive cricket, which is bound to bring failures.
“Honestly, Surya's batting form doesn't concern me because we have committed to an ultra-aggressive template in our dressing room. When you embrace this philosophy, failures are inevitable. It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs off 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we have collectively decided that it's acceptable to fail while pursuing this approach,” Gambhir said in a conversation with JioStar.
"Currently, Abhishek Sharma is in good form and has maintained it throughout the Asia Cup. When Surya finds his rhythm, he will shoulder the responsibility accordingly. In T20 cricket, our focus isn't on individual runs but on the brand of cricket we want to play. With our aggressive style, batters may fail more often, but impact ultimately matters more than mere runs,” he added.
Surya is a great human being, and good humans make good leaders - Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir further said that Suryakumar Yadav is a good human being, which helped him become a good leader and create a great atmosphere in the team.
"Surya is a great human being, and good humans make good leaders. While he speaks highly of me, my role is simply to advise him fairly based on my reading of the game. Ultimately, this is his team. His free-spirited character perfectly matches T20 cricket's essence, it's about freedom and expression,” said Gautam Gambhir.
“Your off-field personality reflects on the field and in the dressing room, and Surya has maintained this atmosphere brilliantly over the past 1.5 years. From our first conversation, we agreed: we will not fear losing. I don't aim to be the most successful coach; I want us to be the most fearless team," he added.
