India National Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir was not a happy man after the Shubman Gill-led side faced a defeat against the Australia National Cricket Team in the ODI series opener.
Gautam Gambhir, along with Sitanshu Kotak and Morne Morkel, was seen engaged in an animated chat with the newly-appointed India National Cricket Team ODI skipper Shubman Gill after the loss in the first match of the series.
Shubman Gill starts his ODI captaincy career with a loss
Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain of India ahead of the Australia tour. Elaborating on the decision, the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that they have identified Shubman Gill as the next all-format captain and want to give him some time to build the team for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027.
This ruthless decision to sack Rohit Sharma despite him leading India to back-to-back triumphs in the ICC tournament didn't sit well with the fans. However, the senior opener made sure to provide support to Gill, and there was no rift between the duo.
Leading India in his first ODI Down Under was always going to be a tough challenge for Shubman Gill, and the young Punjab lad faced a crushing defeat in the first match at the helm in 50-over cricket.
India lost the toss and they were invited to bat first in the match. It was the 16th consecutive toss lost in ODIs by India, with their last win coming in the World Cup 2023 against New Zealand in Mumbai.
Batting first was quite challenging for India because the pitch on offer was quite spicy. To add to India's troubles, there were several rain breaks which resulted in batters not getting any time to get set in the middle, and the Men In Blue were stopped at 136/9 in the 26-over-per-side contest.
With DRS coming into play, the score of Team India was reduced, and Australia were given a target of 131 runs to chase. The Mitchell Marsh-led side easily crossed the finish line with 7 wickets in hand and 29 balls remaining.
Just after the match, head coach Gautam Gambhir caught up with Gill in the middle of the ground and was seen having an intense discussion with him.
Gambhir was joined by his fellow coaches Morne Morkel and Sitanshu Kotak, who closely listened as the head coach was seen lecturing the new India skipper, Gill.

Shubman Gill joins Virat Kohli in the unwanted list
Gill is currently the Test and ODI skipper of India and is serving as the deputy of Suryakumar Yadav in T20I cricket. Several reports have claimed that he would take over as the captain of the Indian T20I team post-T20 World Cup 2026, becoming the all-format captain.
The expectations are quite high from the Punjab cricketer, but his captaincy stint hasn't gotten off to a good start. He lost his first T20I as skipper in 2024 against Zimbabwe before losing his maiden Test at the helm in 2025 against England.
And now, Shubman Gill has lost his first ODI as captain in Perth, which puts him in an unwanted captaincy list that features Virat Kohli. Gill and Kohli are the only two Indian captains in history to lose their first match in all three formats in men's internationals.
Captains to lose their first match in all three formats in men's Internationals:
Stephen Fleming
Shaun Pollock
Tillakaratne Dilshan
Brendon McCullum
Hamilton Masakadza
Virat Kohli
Mohammad Rizwan
Jason Holder
Shubman Gill
