Gautam Gambhir drops big update on India’s 2027 World Cup plans

The focus will gradually be shifted from the T20 World Cup 2026 trophy celebrations to the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held next year, in 2027. What will Team India’s tactics be for the ODI World Cup? Gautam Gambhir revealed his vision early.

Gautam Gambhir provides updates on the 2027 ODI World Cup
The next 50-overs World Cup will be held in South Africa, where the ball can put the batters in trouble, unlike the subcontinental conditions, where batters enjoy scoring runs. According to the latest updates, the 14th edition of the tournament, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November 2027.

Gautam Gambhir claimed that the venues for the tournament can play a vital role in the tactical decisions. He also reflected the fact that in the recent past, India did not play too many One Day International matches- around 24 ODI matches between the IPL and the ODI World Cup 2027.
Gautam Gambhir feels that the ODI World Cup will be very challenging for Team India
As of now, there will be a two-month gap from the international duties because of the Indian Premier League. Gautam Gambhir will keep an eye on the tournament. Decisions for the ODI World Cup 2026 can be made after the inclusion of the IPL 2026.
“There will be plenty of time; the upcoming couple of months will be the IPL 2027. By the end of the Indian Premier League 2027, hope to create a blueprint for the upcoming showdown. The ODI World Cup will be in South Africa, which can be very difficult."

"We have to see which players are capable of playing well under those conditions. We may have to try a lot of combinations as well. The final decision regarding the team for the event will come through a discussion between the selectors and the coaches,” Gautam Gambhir said in the interview.
India eyeing for ODI World Cup
From October 2025 to December 2026, Team India is supposed to play a total of 24 ODIs. According to the calendar, they had already faced Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand for a 3-match ODI series each.
After the conclusion of the IPL 2026, the team will first face Afghanistan in the home ODI series in June, followed by an away series against England in July. Before concluding 2026, the Men In Blue will be up against West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka as well. Apart from the England tour, the remaining ODI fixtures will be on Indian soil.
