Gautam Gambhir left Delhi on Tuesday night to link up with the team in Mumbai for the T20 World Cup 2026. While the head coach of Team India was heading to join the team, he had to face questions related to Pakistan's current stance.
Ahead of the tournament, the Government of Pakistan, in their official statement, informed that they will not play against India on February 15 in Colombo for their group fixture. After the government's stance, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to clarify their position to the International Cricket Council (ICC). As of now, the Pakistan cricket team's position, ahead of the elite tournament, is not clear enough to describe, as the matter is more political than related to cricket.
Gautam Gambhir's reaction to Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026
If we talk about the chances of Team India in the tournament, then they will be hot favourites to win the title again. The upcoming contest, starting on February 7, will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
India, the two-time T20 World Cup champions, will be on the hunt to claim the title for the third time. If they are able to claim the silverware in this edition, then the Men in Blue will be the first-ever team to defend their title successfully. In the history of the T20 World Cup, so far, no team has been able to defend their title.
When Gautam Gambhir faced questions related to Pakistan, he chose not to comment on this topic, as this is an out-and-out controversial point. Gautam Gambhir hesitantly avoided the questions and thanked all the reporters for wishing the team the best for the tournament.

ICC urged Pakistan to reconsider
On the other side, the ICC urged Pakistan to reconsider their decision about the boycott. A series of sanctions might be on the doorstep if the Pakistan cricket team avoids the highly valued India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 match.
"If Pakistan doesn’t relent and play against India, not only will they face financial penalties, perhaps a lawsuit from broadcasters, but also any efforts to go to the ICC Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) are likely to fail," a PCB source was quoted as saying to PTI.
Why Pakistan can face trouble?
It was reported that the top officials of the Pakistan government and their cricket board could show India's stance to protect their decision. The Government of India does not allow their national cricket team to play in Pakistan. But never barred the team from playing against Pakistan. For Pakistan, the situation is different. Their World Cup match against India is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka, which is a neutral venue.
"The PCB might face problems regardless of their government directive to not play India, as they are playing all their matches at a neutral venue (Sri Lanka) as per their wishes and not in India," said another PCB source who informed the media.
“Secondly, while the Indian government has not given permission to its team to play in Pakistan, it has not stopped them from playing against Pakistan at neutral venues in Asia Cup or ICC events even after the May conflict."
