A strong message from India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir went viral, and it was a sharp response to former captain MS Dhoni for his congratulatory post on winning the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8, 2026.

After India lifted the T20 World Cup trophy with a massive win over New Zealand in the final, Dhoni congratulated the Men in Blue and also praised Gambhir, saying his smile looked great on him. His particular line for Gambhir was, "A smile looks great on you; intensity with a smile is a killer combo."

The post quickly went viral across the social media platforms, given the past history between the two Indian icons, so the cricket world enjoyed seeing the two former teammates connected again after such a big moment.

Gautam Gambhir reacts to MS Dhoni’s post and shares the reality of the India dressing room

Now, Gambhir has reacted to Dhoni’s words for him and shared how the pressure inside the Indian dressing room during a World Cup didn’t allow the coaches to express their emotions. The head coach explained that people outside the team often do not fully understand the intense situation players and staff face during such big tournaments in the dugout.

Gautam Gambhir said on the ANI Podcast, “It's very difficult to be in a situation where people have not been. But good on him that he posted on that, honestly, but I feel that when you're in a dugout, there is so much at stake. There is always so much expectation from the Indian team that even if you want to laugh, you can't laugh.

Especially when you play a tournament like the World Cup. Because in India, unfortunately, losing is not an option, but it can happen. Because if losing was not an option, then India would have won all the World Cups. But that doesn't happen. This is sport.”

Gautam Gambhir explains the harsh reality of cricket

The Indian head coach also highlighted that cricket is very different from many other professions. Teams work extremely hard for months and sometimes even years to prepare for a major tournament. But despite all the effort and sacrifices, success is never guaranteed.

Gambhir further explained, “You invest your whole life in something, but there is no guarantee of return. There is no equity or share market where if you invest, you will get a return. Here, you work hard for a year and a half and invest.

And there was no guarantee that we would win the World Cup. So, think about it: if we didn't win the World Cup or lost in the semi-finals, then the return is zero. After so much hard work, after so much investment. That's why I say that sports are very different from any other profession.”

India created history at home

India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup 2026 final to successfully defend their crown at home. With this famous win, India became the first team to win a T20 World Cup at home.

They also made history by winning back-to-back titles and became the first nation to lift the T20 World Cup trophy three times. They had won the first title in 2007 under Dhoni’s captaincy and then in 2024 under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
