The BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has named a 16-member squad for the five-match series against Australia with a couple of changes from the Asia Cup 2025 winning squad. Suryakumar Yadav, who has been going through a lean patch, has been retained as the captain for the upcoming series.

Young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has returned to the side, replacing Hardik Pandya, who has been sidelined due to a quadriceps injury. Washington Sundar has also earned a recall to the T20I setup. Sundar and Reddy are currently part of India’s Test squad for the home series against the West Indies.

The upcoming series is India’s first T20I assignment following their ninth Asia Cup triumph and serves as vital preparation ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

India last faced Australia in a T20I during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where the Men in Blue secured a 24-run victory at Gros Islet. The Men in Blue last played a bilateral T20I series in late 2023 on Indian soil, with the home team winning 4-1.

India last toured Australia for a three-match T20I series at the end of the 2020 season and emerged victorious 2-1 in the contest.

Suryakumar Yadav's Form Has Been Miserable in T20Is

Suryakumar Yadav had mixed outings during the Asia Cup 2025. The batter impressed with his leadership while faltering with the bat. He managed just one run off five balls in the summit clash against Pakistan.

Yadav scored only 72 runs from six innings at an average of 18 and a strike rate of 101.40. His notable performance came in the group stage against Pakistan, where he remained unbeaten on 47 runs from 37 deliveries.

Overall, Suryakumar has scored 2,670 runs in 90 T20 matches at an average of 37.08 and a strike rate of 164.20, including 21 fifties and four centuries.

India have been dominant in the shortest format under his captaincy. The Men in Blue have won all six bilateral T20I series, suffering only three defeats against Zimbabwe, South Africa, and England. They will be hoping to continue their form on the upcoming Australia tour.
