Team India reached the final of the T20 World Cup 2026 by defeating England by seven runs in the second semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Following this massive victory, IPL founder Lalit Modi lauded head coach Gautam Gambhir on social media for his leadership and tactical awareness.

Team India will take on New Zealand in the summit clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8. Gautam Gambhir's tactical decisions during the high-scoring thriller against England played a huge role in helping the Men in Blue defend their total and secure their spot in the grand final.

Sanju Samson Helps India to Post a Massive Total

During the semifinal match on Thursday, English skipper Harry Brook won the toss and opted to bowl first. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted he actually wanted to bat first anyway, and his team proved him right by posting a total of 253/7 in their 20 overs.

Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson delivered a match-defining knock of 89 runs off just 42 balls. Shivam Dube (43), Ishan Kishan (39), Hardik Pandya (27), and Tilak Varma (21) chipped in with crucial runs.

The English bowlers struggled to contain the run flow throughout the first innings on a batting-friendly surface. Will Jacks and Adil Rashid were the only successful bowlers for England, picking up two wickets each while conceding 40 and 41 runs, respectively.

Gautam Gambhir's Tactical Brilliance Secures a Narrow Victory

In reply, England's Jacob Bethell smashed a sensational century, scoring 105 runs off 48 balls. He kept his side in the hunt until the very end, but Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav's tactical brilliance with the ball eventually stopped the English run chase.

India prioritized early wickets to disrupt England's momentum. Hardik Pandya dismissed Phil Salt with his very first delivery. Jasprit Bumrah was then deployed in the powerplay to target Harry Brook, inducing a mistimed shot that resulted in a spectacular backward-running catch by Axar Patel.

India kept three of Bumrah's overs for the final 10 overs of the innings. His spells in the 16th and 18th overs proved to be tactical masterstrokes, as he conceded only 14 runs when England required a massive scoring rate of 14 runs per over.
