India may have missed out on a 2-0 Test series sweep against Sri Lanka, but Sonal Dinusha's remarkable performance earned praise from head coach Gautam Gambhir. The Sri Lankan batter produced a historic performance across the two Tests, finishing as his team's leading run-scorer and playing a defining role in denying India victory in Colombo.
Sonal Dinusha finished the series with 420 runs at an average of 140.00 from four innings, including three centuries and a fifty. His unbeaten 133 in the second innings of the second Test proved particularly crucial, as Sri Lanka recovered from the follow-on to reach 429/9 and secure a memorable draw.

Dinusha was easily Sri Lanka's standout batter during the two-match series. He scored 100 and 84 in the two innings of the first Test in Galle before producing 103 and an unbeaten 133 in Colombo.
His second Test was particularly significant. Dinusha's 103 helped Sri Lanka reach 290 in their first innings after India had posted 503/9 declared. India subsequently enforced the follow-on, leaving the hosts in serious trouble.
However, Dinusha produced an extraordinary response in the second innings. He remained unbeaten on 133 from 264 balls, batting for more than seven hours and helping Sri Lanka reach 429/9 before the match ended in a draw.
His overall tally of 420 runs at 140 made him the highest run-scorer in the series. He also became only the third player in Test history to score centuries in both innings of a Test after being forced to follow on, joining Vijay Hazare in 1948 and Andy Flower in 2001.

India had been in a dominant position after taking a 213-run first-innings lead and enforcing the follow-on. However, Dinusha's resistance, alongside contributions from Sri Lanka's lower order, frustrated India's bowlers and ensured the hosts avoided a series whitewash.
Gautam Gambhir acknowledged the character shown during the Test while specifically highlighting Dinusha's contribution. He praised the qualities required to survive such a demanding situation in Test cricket.

The result meant India won the two-Test series 1-0 after their 165-run victory in the opening Test in Galle.

Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten was equally impressed by Dinusha's match-saving effort. The left-hander had the difficult task of batting for an extended period against India's spin-heavy attack while wickets continued to fall around him.
Kirsten praised Sonal Dinusha's intelligence and temperament, particularly given the pressure of batting at No. 6 in a Test where Sri Lanka were attempting to save the match after following on. He said:
"Never easy to come out to bat at number six. He is a smart cricketer. This innings today would go down in history of Sri Lankan cricket as one of the greatest match saving knocks. It was great to watch."
Sonal Dinusha's unbeaten 133 ultimately became the defining innings of the Colombo Test. His resistance helped Sri Lanka become only the fourth team to draw a Test after being forced to follow on, while India were denied what had appeared to be a likely series sweep.
BCCI breaks silence on India's failure to win 2-0 against Sri Lanka
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla also reflected on India's missed opportunity after the second Test ended in a draw. While acknowledging Sri Lanka's resistance, he backed the Indian team and insisted the result did not indicate any weakness in the side.
On the India-Sri Lanka second Test ending in a draw, Rajeev Shukla told ANI:
"...Our players will perform very well going forward. We had hopes from the morning that we would definitely take their 4 wickets and then win the match after that, but their players got completely set at the crease... They succeeded in digging in and forcing a draw, but that doesn't mean our team is weak in any way. We have already won one match, and we would have won this one too..."
