Gautam Gambhir releases official statement on Shreyas Iyer's exclusion from India Test squad vs England

There was a lot of buzz about the selection of the Indian Test squad for the England tour. Among the notable exclusions, Shreyas Iyer’s removal stood up.

The Chief Selector, Ajit Agarkar, stated that currently, there is no room for Shreyas Iyer in the Indian Test squad. Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir opened up about the omission of Iyer from the test squad.

Gautam Gambhir’s statement

Gautam Gambhir was the mentor when Shreyas Iyer lifted his first IPL trophy as a captain. Gambhir addressed the issue of the exclusion of Iyer from the Test squad for the England tour.

A journalist asked Gambhir about Iyer’s absence from the red-ball format and Gambhir sharply replied that he is not the selectors.

“I am not the selector”, Gautam Gambhir replied to Iyer’s omission.

Gambhir was also not present at the team announcement press conference. The chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, was present at the press conference and answered all the questions about team selection.

Gambhir also previously stated that he had no say in the team selection, but fans targeted Gambhir for every exclusion from the team.

Karun Nair and Sai Sudarshan got the chance over Iyer in the Indian test squad. Iyer was dropped from the test squad in the England series midway because of his poor form in the red-ball format, but he regained his form in the domestic cricket

Shreyas Iyer’s impeccable run

In the past months, Shreyas Iyer has been in an exceptional run at both the International and domestic levels. Iyer played five first-class matches and smashed two centuries in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai.

Currently, Iyer is leading Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025. Punjab finished in the top position in the points table after the league stage. They will be playing Qualifier 1 after 11 years, and Iyer led Punjab to the playoffs after 11 years.

The top 2 finishers will give Iyer and co. An extra cushion to go all out in Qualifier 1. Punjab will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the first Qualifier at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Shreyas Iyer IPL 2025 Performance

Iyer was bought for a whopping price of INR 23.75 crore by Punjab Kings and became the second-most-expensive player in IPL history.

Iyer played with an aggressive approach throughout the tournament and led his team well. PBKS skipper scored a tally of 514 runs in 14 matches so far.

Iyer scored runs at an average of 51.40, which is the best among the skippers of every team. His strike rate was also impressive as he scored runs with a 171.91 strike rate.
