Gautam Gambhir says Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are Shubman Gill's big support
Gautam Gambhir believes that leading India is never an easy job, especially when the captain has to leave out a big-name player from the playing XI. Gill has had to make such difficult decisions early in his captaincy, and Gambhir feels he has managed them well.
Having Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli around gives Gill valuable support. The head coach said that the former Indian captains’ experience can help the current skipper understand the game better and deal with important situations off the field as well.
Gambhir was quoted as saying by JioStar, "In ODIs, he (Gill) is very fortunate that he has got the likes of Rohit and Virat to help him on and off the field. Leaving out anyone in Indian cricket from the playing eleven is always going to be tough. But when you have to do that as a young captain, it is probably the toughest job for any coach and captain to do it. So far, he has done that. He has actually ticked all the boxes.”
Shubman Gill’s tough ODI run continue but Gautam Gambhir predicts turnaround
Gill has won only six of the 12 ODIs as captain. India has also suffered series defeats against England, Australia, and New Zealand during his captaincy. Despite the disappointing results, Gambhir believes that Gill has done many things correctly.
Gambhir said, “I feel that he has done all the right things…he has had a bit of a tough time in One Day cricket. But I am sure, I think things will turn around because he has done all the right things.” Amid this, Rinku Singh urges selectors to pick Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli for 2027 World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir-Shubman Gill partnership set for big Test
The partnership between Gambhir and Gill will be important for India with around a year left before the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Rohit and Kohli are also expected to remain important parts of India’s plans for the tournament.
India will now look to build momentum in the ODI format. They are now set to play a three-match ODI series against the West Indies at home, followed by the five ODIs in New Zealand.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer’s T20I squad is currently in Japan for the Asian Games 2026, with the BCCI CoE head, VVS Laxman, playing the role of the coach in the multi-nation event.
