It seems like Shreyas Iyer, as the T20I captain of India, is only a matter of time, as several new reports claim that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is looking beyond the current captain, Suryakumar Yadav, despite his winning the 2026 ICC T20I World Cup under his leadership.
The prolonged off-form is believed to be one of the reasons for the selectors to consider Shreyas Iyer in consideration to replace Yadav. What will be the stance of the head coach, Gautam Gambhir, if Agarkar and Co. appoint Iyer as the captain on the T20I team?
Rift between Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer?
There are some perceptions about the relationship between Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir. Although the majority of the perceptions are baseless, as there are no concrete reports or evidences which can go against the coach and the player.
If the selectors appoint Iyer as the next captain of the team, then Gautam Gambhir will welcome the decision happily, RevSportz reported. Quoting a source close to the development, it is reported that Gautam Gambhir will have no trouble if Shreyas Iyer becomes the skipper.
Gambhir has no problem: Source
“Nothing could be further from the truth. Gambhir has absolutely no problem with Shreyas becoming the next captain. Obviously, it’s a call to be taken by the selectors. If they pick Shreyas, Gambhir would be perfectly fine with it,” the source informed RevSportz.
The source further mentioned that when Iyer was appointed as the vice-captain of the One Day International team, Gambhir was there in-charge, and he had no reservations about the appointment.
“Shreyas has been made the ODI vice-captain under Gambhir as head coach. Any suggestion of the two not going along well is off the mark,” the source further mentioned.
On the morning of June 4, it was widely published and claimed that the board is all set to sack Suryakumar Yadav from the leadership role and will welcome Shreyas Iyer to take the team further. However, as of now, there are no official releases or any statement issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
When will the winds of change arrive? That's the question
As the claims were made by multiple credible sources, it has created a stir among cricket fans across social media platforms. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra also expressed his views regarding the matter.
He also explains that it will be a significant step if the management awards Shreyas Iyer with the captaincy role. Chopra also claims that it is unlikely to see Yadav soon evacuating the spot for his successor, as he is the T20I World Cup-winning captain.
“Suryakumar Yadav will remain the captain for now because he just won the World Cup. You don't change immediately after winning the World Cup, unless somebody retires, just like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja had retired, and you had to do something else," Aakash Chopra mentions in his YouTube video.
He also clarified that Suryakumar Yadav is not going to retire at this moment. If the media reports and the opinions of the former cricketer are to be believed, then Iyer is going to be the next captain for the T20 International format, but when? That’s the question.
