The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly unlikely to hold a review meeting before the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has faced criticism for his tactics, is unlikely to be removed from his role despite disappointing performances in Test cricket.

India were whitewashed 0-2 by South Africa in the Test series. Following the red-ball series, the Men in Blue will now shift their attention to a three-match ODI series, followed by five T20Is. The first ODI of the upcoming series will begin at the SCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30.

India Suffered a 408-Run Defeat and a 0–2 Whitewash at Home

India lost to South Africa by 408 runs in the second Test in Guwahati. Chasing a massive target of 549, India were bowled out for 140, completing a 0-2 series whitewash after also losing the first Test in Kolkata. The 408-run defeat is India’s biggest loss by runs in Test cricket.

The result was historic for South Africa, who won a Test series in India for the first time in 25 years. Notably, the poor performances led to strong criticism from fans on social media, directed at both the players and the team management.

It is worth mentioning that this series whitewash was India’s third at home, following similar defeats to South Africa in 2000 and New Zealand in 2024. Gautam Gambhir was also the head coach when India suffered the whitewash to New Zealand last year.

Gautam Gambhir to Continue as Coach Until 2027 Amid Concerns Over Selection

Journalist Abhishek Tripathi reported that the BCCI is not planning any review meeting before the T20I series. He added that Gautam Gambhir’s position as head coach is secure until 2027, and there is no discussion about removing him.

However, Tripathi mentioned that the BCCI is unhappy with the selection committee, especially with what it sees as an excessive dependence on all-rounders. The team management opted for several all-rounders in the Test series, and a few of them were underutilized with the ball.

"No review meeting for Team India before the T20 series. Gautam Gambhir will remain coach until 2027. No one is even thinking about removing him. There is dissatisfaction in BCCI regarding the selection committee. BCCI feels that relying too much on all-rounders is not right," Tripathi wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

No Discussions Held Yet With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Regarding Their Future

Abhishek Tripathi also noted that the BCCI has not yet held any discussions with Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli about their future plans. Rohit and Virat, who now play only ODIs, will next be seen in action during the upcoming home series against South Africa.

"No discussions have taken place yet with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli regarding their future," Tripathi added.

A Times of India report earlier stated that the BCCI is planning a meeting in Ahmedabad after the ODI series against South Africa to decide the future of Rohit and Virat in the one-day setup. Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are expected to join top board officials for the discussion.
