India head coach Gautam Gambhir has finally addressed his much-hyped equation with Virat Kohli. From fiery arguments on the field in 2013 to another explosive face-off in 2023 during the IPL, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli have often been painted as arch-rivals.
Every time their teams clashed in the IPL, the drama was almost guaranteed, hyped by broadcasters, and fueled by passionate fans. All the stuff that happened on the field made headlines and became viral content. But now, things have changed completely.

However, after Gambhir was named India’s head coach, they shared a goal of bringing glory to India. Now, Gambhir has made it clear that there’s no bad blood, no lingering tension. The coach said that all the past drama was just part of the game.
The Indian head coach said that he loves it when his and Virat Kohli’s past incidents have been used for the TRP and promotions. However, Gambhir has emphasized that when players wear different jerseys, they fight for pride.

But when united in the national colors, their goal is just to win for India together. Gautam Gambhir was quoted as saying to CNN-News18, “I love that when it’s all for the TRP, it’s all for the views, it’s all for the promotions. When you’re playing for two different teams, everyone has a right to fight for their own team.”
Gambhir further added, “Everyone has the right to fight for their own jersey and have the right to come back in a winning dressing room. So, for me, I think it remains very simple — when you’re playing for the same team, you try and get the results. If you’re playing against each other, you have all the right. Everything is fine between me and Virat. In fact, everything is fine between me and everyone in that.”
Gautam Gambhir reveals how he buries the on-field spats
Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir made it clear that he never holds grudges after fiery on-field moments. Without naming anyone, the Indian head coach revealed that even after intense exchanges during matches, he’s had dinner with the same players after the game.
It is always easy for him to move on from on-field troubles, as Gambhir feels what happens on the field stays there. There is no drama and no baggage in the former Indian opener's dictionary, as he has stressed that it’s all about mutual respect and moving forward after the game.
'Whatever happens on the field, it remains there'
Gambhir further explained, “I won’t want to mention the name. I’ve had some really heated exchanges on the cricket field during a game of cricket, and we’ve had dinner."
"And we’ve had dinner after that; both of us have had dinner after that once the game is over because we know that whatever has happened on the cricket field remains on the cricket field. Once you cross that line, you cross that, and once the game is over, everything comes back to how it was.”
Presently, Gambhir is gearing up for the upcoming England tour, and the selectors are set to announce the squad on May 24 for the five-match Test series.
