Shreyas Iyer’s struggles against the short ball came back to haunt him once again, this time on the fast and bouncy pitch of Perth. In the three-match ODI series opener between India and Australia at the Optus Stadium, Shreyas Iyer fell to a familiar trap set by Josh Hazlewood, and that was a short delivery, which exposed his long-standing weakness.
The Indian middle-order batter, who has been dismissed multiple times in the past by short-pitched deliveries, was outfoxed by Josh Hazlewood’s clever plan. In the 14th over, the Australian pacer delivered a sharp ball that kicked up from a back-of-length area.
The delivery angled in awkwardly, leaving Iyer confused. As India’s vice-captain tried to fend it away, the ball brushed the glove and carried straight to wicketkeeper Josh Philippe, who made no mistake in completing the easy catch to send Iyer back to the pavilion for 11 runs off 24 balls.

The dismissal added to India’s troubles as their batting order crumbled under consistent Australian pressure. Moments after Iyer’s fall, rain interrupted play, forcing the players to leave the field. During one of multiple rain breaks, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir was spotted animatedly discussing Iyer’s dismissal with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.

It seems that Gambhir and Kotak were discussing Iyer’s dismissal in Perth. The Indian head coach was showing the batting coach through his hands what probably went wrong with the Mumbaikar. Gambhir’s frustration was clear, especially given Iyer’s repeated issues with short-pitched bowling.
Cameras caught the Indian head coach visibly enacting the mode of dismissal before realizing the attention and quickly shifting the conversation elsewhere. Now, the lip of the moment is going viral across social media platforms.

Shreyas Iyer vs Josh Hazlewood
This wicket marked the seventh time that Hazlewood has dismissed Iyer across formats, proving once again that Australia has mastered the perfect plan to exploit one of India’s most talked-about technical flaws. This exposed Iyer’s weakness once again, which once cost him a spot in India.
Notably, Iyer's record against Josh Hazlewood isn't impressive. In 7 ODIs, he has scored 55 runs off 57 balls against Hazlewood and has been dismissed three times. The right-handed batter’s average against Hazlewood is 18.33. Overall, Hazlewood has dismissed Iyer seven times in 13 innings.

Ravi Shastri highlights the challenges Gautam Gambhir faces in imposing discipline
On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir’s start as India’s head coach has been rocky, especially in Test cricket. India suffered a shocking 0-3 home loss to New Zealand in late 2024, followed by a 1-3 defeat in Australia, putting huge pressure on him.
After which, the BCCI issued a strict ten-point directive, requiring players to play domestic cricket, limiting personal staff on tours, and restricting time with family. These measures aim to bring discipline and focus to the team after Gambhir’s suggestion.
Former coach Ravi Shastri has highlighted the challenges Gambhir faces. Shastri said, “He (Gambhir) must've seen it is getting out of hand and put a limit to what can be done and what cannot be done.”
