A fresh controversy exploded after India’s embarrassing 30-run defeat to South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and the biggest question now is whether captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir are on the same page when it comes to home pitches.

Just a few weeks ago, before the home Test series against the West Indies, Shubman Gill had confidently declared that India would no longer rely on extreme turning tracks. He wanted pitches that give both batters and bowlers a fair chance and a fair contest for the fans.

Shubman Gill told reporters ahead of the India-West Indies Test series, “We would be looking to play on wickets that offer both to the batsmen and to the bowlers.”

But what happened in Kolkata was the exact opposite of that vision. The Eden Gardens pitch began breaking up right from Day 1, and the first Test finished inside three days. A total of 38 wickets fell in the Kolkata Test, where the spinners took 22 wickets, while the pacers grabbed 16.

The Eden Gardens surface kept surprising batters with uneven bounce and sharp turn. Gill himself was injured in the first inning and didn’t bat in the second. Now, the Indian captain is unlikely to return for the second and final Test against South Africa in Guwahati, starting on November 22.

Gautam Gambhir defends Eden Gardens pitch

India’s collapse while chasing 124 shocked everyone as they were bowled out for just 93 runs. South Africa won their first test on Indian soil in 15 years. This defeat made fans and experts question India’s team strategy, pitch preparation, and communication within the setup.

But what added more fuel to the fire was Gautam Gambhir’s strong stand after the defeat in Kolkata. The head coach made it clear that the pitch was exactly the kind of surface the team had asked for. He blamed the batters’ lack of discipline and control for the loss, not the conditions.

Gambhir said that India should have chased the target comfortably if they had applied themselves better. He said at the post-match press conference, “It was not an unplayable wicket; there were no demons. This is exactly the pitch we were looking for. When you don't play well, this is what happens.”

Cricket experts blast Eden Gardens pitch

But not everyone agrees with Gambhir’s justification. Several big names, including Cheteshwar Pujara, Harbhajan Singh, and Dale Steyn, have openly criticized the Eden Gardens pitch. They argued that balls shooting up unpredictably—like the ones that troubled KL Rahul and Aiden Markram—made batting far too dangerous.

With this loss, India has now suffered four of their last six home tests, which rarely happened in the past decade. India’s unbeatable aura at home has clearly taken a hit, and the confusion between the team’s leadership only makes the situation look more worrying.

Well, the Indian team wasted no time getting back to work on Tuesday as they returned to the Eden Gardens for an optional training session. Sai Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel worked on their shots and footwork with head coach Gautam Gambhir watching the session closely.
