Gautam Gambhir’s position as India’s head coach is under threat, as the former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has openly expressed his interest in this position. Sourav Ganguly previously stayed away from the high-pressure role due to other responsibilities, but he is now ready for the job.

Ganguly, one of India’s most influential cricketing minds and one of the most successful captains, has served as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president, BCCI president, Delhi Capitals’ advisor and mentor in the IPL, and coach in the Women’s Premier League.

Ganguly's sudden interest comes at a time when all eyes were on Gautam Gambhir as he is struggling to replicate his white-ball success in Test cricket as the Indian head coach.

Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI, “I never really thought about it (coaching the Indian team) because I got into different roles. I finished in 2013 and then became CAB president and then board (BCCI) president. We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50, so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it. We’ll see where it goes.”

Red-Ball woes put Gautam Gambhir under the scanner

There are already reports that the BCCI is backing Gambhir for now, as the red-ball failures have put his position under the radar. Under Gambhir’s guidance, the Men in Blue achieved significant success in white-ball cricket, but he is yet to prove his leadership in Test cricket.

India already lost the Test series to New Zealand at home and then the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in a decade under Gambhir. So, if the team continues to falter in the traditional format of the game, Ganguly could emerge as a serious alternative, bringing experience, calm leadership, and a proven understanding of Test cricket’s demands.

And now Ganguly has openly expressed his interest in coaching the Indian team, Gambhir must deliver desirable results in the ongoing five-match Test series in England. One more Test series loss could prove too costly for Gambhir to hold on to his role across the formats of the game.

Gautam Gambhir is very passionate and straightforward: Sourav Ganguly

Meanwhile, Ganguly defended Gambhir and said that the coach will learn and grow with time. Ganguly praised Gambhir’s passion and honesty and also wished him the best for the journey ahead.

Ganguly said at the same interview, “I see him now. He is very passionate. He is very straightforward. He is open about everything, and he says things—people, team, players. And from the outside it feels that he is a very straightforward person. You get what you see. I wish him all the best. But just like everyone, he will also learn and grow.”
