Finally, some relief for the Mumbai Indians (MI). After suffering four defeats in a row, they bounced back strongly. Against the Gujarat Titans (GT), at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, he got the needed win in a commanding way.

Along with the two points, there are multiple positive takeaways for MI as well. The century of Tilak Varma, the timely counterattacking batting by Naman Dhir, the first wicket for Jasprit Bumrah, and a dominating bowling force, the Mumbai Indians will be eager to continue the momentum in the remainder of the season.

Jasprit Bumrah's bad patch is over for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026 season

More than the batting works, it was the bowlers of MI who shaped the path to the finish line smoothly for the team. Bumrah got the breakthrough in the very first ball of the second over in the form of the GT opener Sai Sudharsan. The other two in-form batters of the Titans, Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill, also dispatched quickly inside the powerplay.

Impact player Ahswini Kumar completed his 4-over spells with 4 wickets in his bag for an economy rate of only 6.00. Kumar claimed the wickets of Gill, Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, and Rashid Khan.

Tilak Varma was outstanding tonight

Batting first, the Mumbai Indians managed to confirm a competitive total of 199 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs, mostly thanks to the century by the middle-order batter Tilak Varma. The 23-year-old batter got his maiden hundred when the team needed him the most.

Naman Dhir’s 45-run innings was also important for the team. At one point in the first innings, MI was on 44 for 3. From there, they took themselves to claim 199 runs.

Varma’s unbeaten 101 run contribution was from 45 balls. He needed eight 4s and seven 6s to decorate the impressive innings. In reply, GT, losing wickets in between short intervals, got only 100 runs in exchange for all of their 10 batter. In 15.5 overs, the Mumbai Indians won the match. MI won the match by 99 runs.

Shubman Gill explained why they suffered the heavy defeat against the Mumbai Indians

“Honestly, I think we gave away too many runs in the middle overs. On a wicket like that, I think 160-170 was a par score. But I think there are a lot of lessons for us from this game. I mean, a small hiccup, but now we’ve got a couple of games on the road, so hopefully we will come back on the winning side again,” Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill said after the match.

“I think the wicket was a little bit on the slower side. I don’t think we hit the right areas. The length of the ball wasn’t coming on as well; some balls were coming, some weren’t, and some were keeping low."

"I think we could have hit that length in the middle overs a bit more consistently, which we were not able to. (Did the pitch change when they were batting?) I think it was pretty similar. If at all, it could have gotten a little bit better because I think there was a bit more dew when we were batting,” Shubman Gill added.
