In a shocking development, explosive Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell may leave the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Glenn Maxwell has reportedly unfollowed his current franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Instagram.

Glenn Maxwell has been a consistent member of the Royal Challengers playing XI since 2021. He played memorable knocks for the franchise in the marquee T20 tournament. However, he struggled to make an impact in this year's IPL tournament. He was even dropped from the team for a few matches.

The 35-year-old scored only 52 runs in 10 innings at a disappointing average of 5.78 and a strike rate of 120.93. The right-handed batter was dismissed for a duck in the Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, the off-spinner took six wickets at an average of 21.50 and an economy rate of 8.06.

Glenn Maxwell To Leave Royal Challengers Bengaluru?

There are rumors that Glenn Maxwell has unfollowed Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Instagram. However, it couldn't be verified if Maxwell was following the franchise before. Fans and RCB fan handles on social media X (formerly known as Twitter) shared that the all-rounder unfollowed RCB.

Glenn Maxwell was purchased by the Royal Challengers for a whopping Rs 14.25 crore in the 2021 auction. He was retained for Rs 11 crore for the next three seasons. In 2021, Maxwell scored 513 runs at an average of 42.75 and a strike rate of 144.10. He scored 301 and 400 runs in the following two seasons.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru To Release Faf du Plessis

The Bengaluru-based franchise might part ways with captain Faf du Plessis for the next season. The team management could consider an Indian player for captaincy. KL Rahul, who is currently leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), is one of the candidates to be considered, as he could part ways with the franchise.

Du Plessis' captaincy is questioned after mixed results in the IPL. In his debut season as RCB's skipper in 2022, the team finished third but lost in the playoffs. The RCB team failed to advance to the playoffs during the 2023 season. They suffered six consecutive losses in 2024 but managed to reach the playoffs.

RCB is one of the few teams in the IPL yet to win an IPL despite playing in every season. The team reached three finals, in the 2009, 2011, and 2016 editions. The RCB team has been criticized by critics for their strategy. They relied on a top-heavy batting lineup without a quality bowling attack in their team.

The IPL owners and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon meet to discuss key topics such as player retention policies, right-to-match options, and salary caps. The important meeting is set to take place on Tuesday, July 30, in Mumbai. The franchises will get clarity on the number of retentions.
