In a massive setback for Australia, veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand due to a fractured right wrist. Maxwell suffered a freak injury ahead of the first T20I during net practice at Mount Maunganui, forcing him to miss the series.

Maxwell was struck on the forearm by a straight drive from Mitchell Owen while bowling. The 36-year-old is also uncertain for next month’s five-match T20I series against India at home. He recently showed his form by scoring an unbeaten half-century to lead Australia to a T20I series victory over South Africa.

Glenn Maxwell Ruled Out of New Zealand Series Due to Freak Injury

Matthew Short, who was batting in the adjacent net at Tauranga’s Bay Oval, witnessed Glenn Maxwell being struck by Mitchell Owen’s shot. Short expressed confidence that the experienced all-rounder would bounce back from the setback.

"We're training under a marquee, so it's really echo-y and loud. I saw (Owen) smoked it and then the aftermath – it hit Maxi on the wrist. It didn't sound good," Short told cricket.com.au.

"(Owen) is not the guy you want to be bowling to in T20 training, that's for sure. Maxi's been there and gone through that (serious injuries) a couple of times now – he was a bit disappointed but it's just like any other injury. I'm sure he'll get through it," he added.

Josh Philippe Named as Injury Replacement for New Zealand T20I Series

Scans have confirmed that Glenn Maxwell has fractured his wrist. Cricket Australia selected 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe as his replacement.

Philippe last played a T20I against India in 2023 and had previously been overlooked when Josh Inglis was sidelined with a calf injury.

The 28-year-old has been in impressive form recently, scoring an unbeaten 87-ball 112 in the first unofficial Test during Australia A’s tour of India A, followed by scores of 39 and 50 in the second game.

Philippe has struggled in T20Is, amassing 150 runs from 12 matches at an average of 12.50 and a strike rate of 109.48. His inclusion in the playing XI will depend on team combinations.

Australia’s updated T20I squad for New Zealand series: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Matt Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Josh Philippe, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.

Glenn Maxwell Returns to Australia for Specialist Consultation After Wrist Fracture

Glenn Maxwell has returned to Australia to consult a specialist, who will determine his recovery timeline after fracturing his wrist. The 36-year-old faces a race against time to be fit for the five-match T20I series against India.

According to the schedule, the series will begin in Canberra on October 29, with subsequent matches in Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast, and Brisbane. Maxwell may not be ready until the start of the Big Bash League, depending on specialist advice.

Australia may include Marcus Stoinis in the playing XI. Stoinis, who hasn’t featured in the T20I setup since November last year, is expected to slot into the middle order alongside power hitters Mitchell Owen and Tim David.
