Australian legend Glenn McGrath reacted hilariously after Nathan Lyon surpassed him on the all-time wicket-takers list during the third Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series against England in Adelaide. McGrath jokingly pretended to react angrily to the milestone, even mock-slamming his chair, but with a smile on his face.

After being left out of the pink-ball Test in Brisbane, Lyon made a return in Adelaide with an instant impact. The off-spinner struck twice in his very first over on the second day, removing Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett to put England under early pressure. He changed the momentum in Australia’s way with quick wickets.

Lyon became Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Only Shane Warne, who finished his career with 708 wickets, remains ahead of him on the list.

McGrath, who was in the commentary box at the time, gave a funny reaction. Television cameras showed him pretending to lose his cool, holding his head and lifting his chair as if he might throw it. McGrath’s playful response made fellow commentators laugh and quickly spread on social media.

Here's the video of McGrath's playful reaction:

It Took No Time At All When Nathan Lyon Had That Chance - Adam Gilchrist

Legendary Aussie wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist highlighted the significance of Lyon’s moment. He added that while the milestone took years to arrive, Lyon wasted no time once the opportunity presented itself.

“Two in a row for Lyon, outstanding entry,” Gilchrist said on Kayo Sports’ live Ashes coverage. “Duckett goes, he looks a bit perplexed, a bit bedazzled but Australia celebrate. Nathan Lyon is now Australia’s second-highest Test wicket taker.

“What a list of names there. We’ve been made to wait significantly longer than we’d all thought to have a shot at getting above McGrath, but it took no time at all when he had that chance,” he added.

Australia added some valuable runs after resuming at 326 for eight before being dismissed for 371. Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers for England with a five-wicket haul. Mitchell Starc smashed a half-century, but Archer brought the innings to a close by bowling him.

England then ended the day in deep trouble at 213 for eight. With wickets tumbling and a deficit still to overcome, they face a tough challenge if they are to stay alive in the Ashes series.
