Global Super League to be hosted by Guyana, competition to feature teams from different countries

A new T20 tournament called the Global Super League is set to be launched in Guyana this year. A total of five teams will be featuring in the inaugural edition of the competition which is scheduled to be played from November 26 to December 7.

The five teams will be representing five different countries. The competition will have a prize money of US$1 million. The tournament has been sanctioned by Cricket West Indies (CWI). It also has the full support of the government of Guyana. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the government is a 'key stakeholder' in the tournament.

The tournament will be South America's first standalone cricket event. One team from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) - Guyana Amazon Warriors - and four other T20 teams from around the world will be participating in the tournament. The report further stated that one of those four teams could be England's Hampshire.

Global Super League format:

Global Super League T20 will have a total of 11 games. Each team will be playing four matches in the group stage. The top two teams will then progress for the final. All the games will be taking place at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.

"The passion for cricket in Guyana rivals that of fans anywhere, and we look forward to celebrating our love of the game and our rich and vibrant country with both those visiting in person and watching from around the world," Clive Lloyd, the Global Super League chairman was quote via a release.

"The Global Super League has the full support of the Government of Guyana as we build a world class sports tourism product," Mohammed Irfaan Ali, president of the co-operative Republic of Guyana said.

"Cricket is part of our cultural history, it is that unifying force, part of our heritage and an integral part of our strategic objective in economic diversification with a strong emphasis on tourism," he added.

The tournament will be clashing with the Abu Dhabi T10. The Abu Dhabi T20 is scheduled to be played from November 21 to December 2. The competition will also clash with Bangladesh's tour of the Caribbean. The Test series between the two countries is scheduled to begin on November 22. It will be followed by three ODIs and as many T20Is.

The Global Super League will be the first major tournament featuring T20 teams from different parts of the world since the Champions League T20. The tournament was an annual T20 competition in which the T20 teams from different countries participated. The first edition of Champions League T20 was held in 2009 while the last edition was held in 2014.
