Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has warned Australia ahead of their Test tour of India in early 2027. Clarke said that Australia's batters have struggled against quality spin bowling in recent years and suggested that India should prepare turning pitches to make the most of that weakness.

Michael Clarke's comments came after India's win over Afghanistan in the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. India declared at 564/8 in their first innings before bowling Afghanistan out for 152 and 112 to secure an innings-and-300-run victory inside three days.

Australia Has Gone Backwards Against Spin - Michael Clarke Warns Ahead of India Tour

Speaking to RevSportz, Michael Clarke raised concerns about Australia's ability to handle spin bowling ahead of their Test tour of India in 2027. The former Australia captain said India's spin attack could be the biggest challenge for the visitors and urged the hosts to prepare turning pitches.

"I see three spinners being a big threat. If I was India, I'd be producing wickets that turn; there's no doubt about it," Clarke told RevSportz.

"Australia has struggled to play spin bowling. If anything, I think we've gone backwards, not forwards, when it comes to facing spin bowling. We've just come off a loss in Pakistan in a one-day series - again, spinners bowled us out."

Michael Clarke further added, "Our luxury is we've got Nathan Lyon, who is a wonderful bowler, a world-class bowler. So, hopefully, Lyon stays fit. We'll need him over here. We've got to also find some other spin-bowling options, which we've got, but they've got to work out who the best is. But I would imagine Australia will need to prepare to face a lot of spin when they come to India."

He's Got Everything Required to Succeed at the Highest Level - Michael Clarke on Manav Suthar

Michael Clarke was impressed with Manav Suthar's performance on Test debut and praised the young spinner's skill set. The former Australia captain said that Suthar has the qualities needed to succeed in international cricket, including drift, control, and variation.

"Any Test debut like that - it doesn't matter who you play against - is impressive. The way he bowls is fantastic. That shape out of his hand, he gets the ball to drift. His skill of varying line, length, change of pace... I think he's got everything that's required to have success at the highest level, and he's got age on his side as well."

"I think your debut is about feeling like you're ready to play at the highest level. But if you actually go out and do it, it actually gives that self-belief and that self-confidence so much more. It goes from 'I think I can' to 'I know I can.' And he certainly showed that."

Suthar enjoyed a memorable debut against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. The left-arm spinner finished with match figures of 7/62, including a brilliant 6/33 in the first innings.

Australia Face Tough Challenge in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2027

The 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy will feature a five-Test series in India from January 21 to March 3. The series will be an important test for India's new-look side without veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The BCCI has selected Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi, and Ahmedabad as the host venues. Guwahati will stage a Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test for the first time, while traditional venues such as Mumbai and Bengaluru have not been included.

Australia will arrive as defending champions after winning the 2024-25 series 3-1. However, they are still searching for their first Test series victory in India since 2004. India will rely heavily on captain Shubman Gill and spinners to secure the victory.
