Australia women’s team captain Alyssa Healy is doubtful for the semi-final clash against Harmanpreet Kaur’s side in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. Head coach Shelley Nitschke said they remain hopeful about Healy’s participation and added that a final decision will be made closer to the game against India.
Healy sustained a calf strain during training following the team’s win over Bangladesh. The injury forced her to miss two league-stage games against England and South Africa. The Australia skipper scored a brilliant century against Bangladesh at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on October 16.
We're Hopeful Again - Shelley Nitschke on Alyssa Healy’s Participation
During the press conference after the win over South Africa, Shelley Nitschke gave an update on captain Alyssa Healy’s fitness. Nitschke said that Alyssa Healy is still undergoing assessments, and the team remains hopeful she will recover in time.
“Obviously she wasn't quite up to it tonight, but she'll continue to be assessed. We're really hopeful for the semi, but there are still a few days to play out before that. We're hopeful again, and she'll just continue to be assessed the closer we get to the game,” Nitschke said.
Healy’s absence from the semi-final would be a setback for Australia. The captain played a key role in their group-stage clash against India, scoring 142 runs off 107 balls, including 21 fours and three sixes, helping the team chase down a record 331-run target in Vizag.
Alyssa Healy-led Australia’s Performance in the 2025 Women’s World Cup So Far
The Australian women’s team, led by Alyssa Healy, has been dominant in the 2025 Women’s World Cup. They are unbeaten and finished at the top of the points table. Out of seven matches, they secured six wins, with one match abandoned due to rain.
They started with an 89-run victory over New Zealand, followed by a rain-affected clash against Sri Lanka. Australia then thrashed Pakistan by 107 runs and defeated India by three wickets. The team recorded wins against Bangladesh by ten wickets and England by six wickets.
Australia are the defending champions in the tournament, having won the previous edition in 2022. They will be hoping to defend their title in the ongoing tournament.
England Women May Be Without Sophie Ecclestone Due to Shoulder Injury
England Women could face a setback as their left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone may miss the upcoming match due to a shoulder injury. She landed awkwardly on her left shoulder during the match against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam.
“After landing awkwardly on her left shoulder in the field in the first over, Sophie Ecclestone experienced more discomfort in her left shoulder while bowling and is now receiving treatment. As a precaution, she won't return to the field during England's bowling innings,” England Cricket gave an official update during the first innings of the clash.
England are set to face South Africa Women in the first semi-final of the tournament at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday, October 29. The winner of the match will secure a place in the final, scheduled to take place on Sunday in Navi Mumbai.
