Former Australia batter Damien Martyn has taken a dig at Nasser Hussain after the former England skipper blamed the timing of the World Cup for his country’s poor performance in the ongoing tournament.
England entered the competition as the reigning champions and one of the strongest contenders to win the tournament. The Jos Buttler-led side, however, came up with a disastrous performance and never really managed to hit the top gear. They began their campaign with an embarrassing 9-wicket loss against New Zealand and things did not really change much for the remainder of the World Cup.
The defending champions spent the better part of the tournament at the last spot in the points table and seemed poised to end up with the wooden spoon. They were looking set to miss out on the 2025 Champions Trophy too. However. a couple of wins towards the end of the league stage helped England climb up the points table and finish in the seventh spot.
Damien Martyn trolls Nasser Hussain:
Following England’s disastrous outing in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Nasser Hussain has suggested that the timing of the competition could be one of the reasons behind the poor performance. Surprisingly, England’s Ashes opponents Australia have qualified for the semifinals after winning seven games in a row.
“It’s hard for England because of the timing of World Cups on the back of an Ashes series,” Hussain told the Daily Mail.
“There’s so much focus on the Ashes that come the end of it, you are mentally exhausted. You look at players like Chris Woakes and Mark Wood and both were mentally and physically exhausted. So it’s about planning across formats. We need to give each format equal care and attention all the way through.
“It’s hard for England with the timing of a lot of these World Cups at the end of the (UK) summer so it’s about never taking your eye off any format because if you do, sides will go past you when you think that you’re OK. But that is not easy to do when you’ve got so many players playing all the time,” he added.
Hussain’s comments, however, have not gone down well with many including Damien Martyn. Taking a dig at the ex-England captain for his excuse, he took to X to write: “The hits keep on rolling… Got to be someone else’s fault the World Cup display..”
