From being dropped from the team to becoming the captain of India’s T20I squad, Shreyas Iyer is currently nearing his peak as a captain. On Saturday, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee named Iyer as the successor of Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the UK tour and the 2026 Asian Games.
It was an honorable moment for him, as Shreyas mentioned after securing a win for the SoBo Mumbai Falcons over Triumphs Knights MNE. Ironically, Suryakumar Yadav is the skipper of the Triumphs Knights in the ongoing T20 Mumbai 2026 league.
Definitely happy: Shreyas Iyer
Comments were flooded across social media platforms as soon as the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced Iyer’s name as the newest captain of the national side for the T20I format. Fans had to wait for hours to hear the words from the captain’s mouth.
After playing a match-winning knock for the Mumbai Falcons, Shreyas Iyer mentioned that it was an honorary moment for him, and he was very happy to receive the news. Leading the national team at the highest level of the game brought him a proud moment.
“It’s a great feeling and also an honor to represent the country at this level and lead them. Definitely happy,” Shreyas Iyer said after being officially appointed as the leader of the T20 International team.

Iyer wins POTM against Suryakumar Yadav's team
On Saturday, Shreyas Iyer’s Mumbai Falcons claimed a commanding win over Suryakumar Yadav’s Triumphs Knights. Iyer was named the Player of the Match for playing a match-defining 61-run knock off 36 balls. His innings was laced with five 4s and four 6s. Because of the captain’s knock, Falcon needed only 16.4 overs to claim the target of 148 runs.
In this match, Suryakumar Yadav also played a brilliant knock, but his efforts were not enough to secure a win for his team against the Falcons. In 24 balls, supported by three 4s and four 6s, Yadav scored 48 runs.
Ahead of the match at the Wankhede Stadium, Suryakumar Yadav congratulated Shreyas Iyer for being promoted as the captain of the team, which has three T20I World Cup titles. The latest they claim this year was under the leadership of Yadav, who has been snubbed from the team entirely.
Yadav's heartfelt message for the newly appointed skipper of the national team
The former Team India skipper mentioned that he was very happy to learn of Iyer’s appointment as the team leader, and as a Mumbaikar, it was another proud moment for him, as Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Iyer are all of them are from Mumbai.
“Very happy that a Mumbaikar is going to lead in T20I. Wishing you all the luck. Boys are super amazing. They will definitely respond well to your ideas. Be yourself. I am watching you close,” Suryakumar said.
