On Monday, December 29, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officially announced that the star pacer Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the remainder of the Ashes 2025-26.
Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test after suffering a hamstring injury during the fourth Test match that the Three Lions won at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) within 2 days of the play.
ECB issues official update on Gus Atkinson
In an official statement issued on Gus Atkinson, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated that the scans revealed a hamstring injury.
"England Men’s seamer Gus Atkinson has been ruled out for the remainder of the Ashes tour after scans confirmed he has sustained a left hamstring injury.
"The Surrey right-armer left the field after bowling his fifth over of Australia’s second innings during England’s victory at the MCG in the fourth Test.
"England will not call up a replacement for the fifth Test, which gets under way in Sydney on 4 January," ECB stated.
Who will replace Gus Atkinson in the England XI in Sydney?
The fifth and final Test match of the series between Australia and England will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and the English team will have to finalize who will replace Gus Atkinson in the side.
Notably, Atkinson was the third English bowler to leave the tour with an injury after Mark Wood (knee) and Jofra Archer (side strain).
England have decided not to name a replacement in the squad, which means either Durham seamer Matthew Potts or Surrey's Matthew Fisher can be included in the playing XI.
Among the spin-bowling option, the visitors have Shoaib Bashir on the bench and he could be drafted in if there is some help for spinners on the surface.
Joe Root speaks on England's win at MCG
Ben Stokes and Joe Root won their first Test on Australian soil at the Melbourne Cricket Ground just recently. Talking about the win, Root said that he was feeling weird because they had already lost the series. He elaborated:
"It feels weird. It's disappointing that we've lost the series, but it's really important that we managed to get the right side of the result here and it's something to build on into into the next game as well.
"Of course, whenever you lose a series, it's very disappointing. And every time you go out there, you're doing everything you can to be on the right side of the result.
"I didn't want to come here and lose another Ashes series. But unfortunately, sometimes you get outplayed, you make a few mistakes, and against good opposition, they hurt you. That's what happened on those occasions. But it was really important that we responded well to that, and when we got our opportunities this week, we did that."
