Hampshire Cricket Club is facing backlash from supporters after naming New Zealand bowler Scott Kuggeleijn in their squad for the upcoming County Championship fixture against Warwickshire. The club listed the overseas player on X without making a prior formal announcement about his signing.

Kuggeleijn was acquitted of rape and indecent assault charges after two trials in 2017. The case stemmed from an alleged incident involving a woman in Hamilton in 2015. Notably, the right-arm fast bowler has previously spoken about the legal proceedings and the impact they had on his cricketing career.

Hampshire Fans Criticize Scott Kuggeleijn Signing

Hampshire have faced a strong reaction from their supporters after including Scott Kuggeleijn in their squad. The 34-year-old featured in the 15-man squad posted by the county on X, even though Hampshire had not made a separate public announcement confirming his arrival as an overseas signing.

The move quickly drew criticism from supporters on social media. One fan described the decision as “a disgrace”, while another called it “shameful” and “a new low for the club”.

Kuggeleijn has joined Hampshire for the final four matches of their County Championship campaign. The New Zealand all-rounder replaced Delano Potgieter, who was called up to the South Africa A squad for their series against Bangladesh A.

The New Zealander will be available for home fixtures against Warwickshire and Sussex, followed by away matches against Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

Scott Kuggeleijn’s Past Continues to Draw Protests

Scott Kuggeleijn’s selection has attracted renewed attention because of a legal case dating back to 2015. He was charged with sexual violation by rape and indecent assault involving two complainants. The first trial ended with a hung jury, while he was acquitted after a second trial in 2017.

Although Kuggeleijn was acquitted, his selection for professional cricket teams has continued to generate protests. His inclusion in New Zealand’s squad for a 2019 match at Eden Park led spectators to display posters objecting to his presence in the team.

Scott Kuggeleijn has continued to play regularly for Northern Districts in New Zealand. He has also represented the Black Caps across all three international white-ball and red-ball formats.

Kuggeleijn has played three Tests, two ODIs and 18 T20Is for New Zealand, taking 27 wickets. His first-class record is considerably more extensive, with 379 wickets at an average of 29.80. The 34-year-old has scored just under 4,000 runs in first-class cricket, including four centuries and 20 fifties.

Hampshire Face Relegation Pressure as Kyle Abbott Extends Stay

Hampshire are currently at the bottom of Division One with 16 points behind Leicestershire, who remain one of their remaining opponents. They are also 19 points behind Surrey in the first safety position.

The team will first host Warwickshire at the Utilita Bowl before facing Sussex at home. They will then travel to Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, with the latter fixture potentially having a major impact on the relegation battle.

Kyle Abbott has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the county until at least the end of the 2027 season. Abbott joined Hampshire in 2014 and has since taken more than 500 wickets for the county at an average below 20.

"Hampshire has become a very special place to me over the years, and I'm incredibly proud to be extending my time with the club," Abbott told the club website.

"We have a brilliant group of players and staff, and I still feel hugely motivated to keep contributing, keep improving, and help this team push for major honours".
