England captain Harry Brook was appointed England's skipper after Jos Buttler was axed from the leadership role following the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He has taken a dig at England's greats after 23 losses in 34 ODI matches.

The England team faced a major setback in the 2023 ICC World Cup, when they could not qualify for the semi-finals with just 3 wins in the tournament. While they reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, they were thrown out of the group stages of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after three consecutive losses.

Jos Buttler was then sacked as skipper in an unpleasant note, and Harry Brook, the English Test vice-captain, was named the skipper of the England side in the two white-ball formats.

England face another series defeat in ODIs under Harry Brook

England suffered another series defeat against New Zealand in ODIs, with captain Harry Brook hitting out at the English stars in the side. Despite fielding a strong squad, the Englishmen have lost 23 of their last 34 matches in the 50-over format.

The England team was bowled out for just 234 in the first ODI, with skipper Harry Brook single-handedly scoring more than 50% of the game. They were then bowled out for just 175 in the second ODI, with Jamie Overton being the top scorer.

After such poor form, England would have to rethink their aggressive approach. Five of their top 6 players in the ODI team are also part of the England side in the Ashes. They have yet to put forward a significant total of above 250 runs in an innings.

“It’s not too dissimilar to the way we play Test cricket, really,” said Harry Brook

Brook has said that the one-dayers are not very different from the approach they play their Test cricket with. Currently, they are ranked eighth in the ICC Rankings, and if a team ranks below 10 by March 2027, they will have to play the qualifiers for the World Cup.

“It’s not too dissimilar to the way we play Test cricket, really. We play aggressively in Test cricket, and it’s not too far off. Obviously, we haven’t played much one-day cricket in the last however many years," Harry Brook said of the difficulties of switching formats.

"I can’t quite put my finger on why we haven’t batted well enough. It’s just one of those things. You come to play the second-best team in the world on their own patch, and they’ve hammered us."

"Everybody in that batting line-up is good enough to be able to face a swinging and seaming ball. In my eyes, that’s just an excuse, and they’re good enough to be able to cope with that and score runs against that,” he added.

"They just haven’t performed well enough." England skipper seemingly losing patience

While the focus remains on the upcoming Ashes tour, England has failed to perform in the white-ball format. They have started preparations for the 2027 ICC World Cup to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

“You go round every single player there and you think, ‘bloody hell, there aren’t many teams that they don’t get into in the world.’ We’ve got five, six, maybe seven batters who would get into almost every team in the world," the captain relied on the brilliance of the players who are part of the English playing XI.

"So yeah, they just haven’t performed well enough. It’s disappointing for the fans, who want to watch us. We entertain people because they know that we play such an exciting brand of cricket,” he said.
