England vice-captain Harry Brook has issued a bold statement ahead of Day 4 of the second Test match against India at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Brook made it clear that England are prepared to chase down any target in the fourth innings set by Team India, adding ‘everybody in the world’ knew that.
Harry Brook, who scored 158 runs, added a 303-run partnership with wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. England had resumed the day at 77/3 and were quickly reduced to 84/5 before the pair rescued the team.
However, the team collapsed late in the innings, losing their last five wickets for just 20 runs to be all out for 407. India ended the day at 64/1 in their second innings, extending their lead to 244 runs.
Everybody In The World Knows That - Harry Brook
Speaking at a press conference following the end of the third day's play, Harry Brook said that his team was in a difficult position but remained optimistic about a comeback. Brook stated that England can turn the game around with early strikes on Day 4.
“I think everybody in the world knows that we’re going to try and chase whatever they set us," Brook said. "We’ve obviously got a big task at hand tomorrow morning and we’ll try and get a couple of wickets early on and try and put them under pressure."
“Obviously, they are in front of the minute, but if we get a couple of early wickets in the morning… you never know how this game can go. As we’ve seen last week, we got 7 for 30 runs and then 6 for 40 runs at Headingley and then they’ve done the same to us today. Everything happened so quickly and you never know how the game can go," he added.
I Was Definitely Hungry to Get a Hundred Today - Harry Brook
Harry Brook entered the second Test in Birmingham after a mixed outing in the series opener at Leeds, where he scored 99 and 0. He had never been dismissed in the 90s in any form of cricket before. The right-handed batter narrowly avoided a first-ball dismissal to Jasprit Bumrah.
Brook admitted he was eager to make up for the missed century. He said the disappointment fueled his determination to score big in Birmingham.
“I was definitely hungry to get a hundred today. I’d never been out in the 90s before. It was disappointing, but I should have got a pair last week, so I can’t complain too much," he said.
Jamie Smith Tried to Change the Momentum Back in Our Favour - Harry Brook
England were in deep trouble at 84/5 when Jamie Smith and Harry Brook stitched together a crucial partnership. Smith played a sensational knock, finishing unbeaten on 184 off 207 balls to lead England’s fightback.
Brook said that Smith successfully shifted the momentum with his aggressive approach in England’s favor. He added that from the non-striker’s end, it felt like Smith could clear the ropes at will, so his main focus was simply rotating the strike.
“He tried to change the momentum back in our favor and it worked for a long period of time. It was awesome. It was so good to watch from the other end. I felt like he could hit four or six every ball. I was just trying to get him on strike," Brook said.
