Former England captain Nasser Hussain expressed his admiration for India batter Virat Kohli and named him as his top pick for a successful 2024 season. Nasser Hussain said that Virat Kohli is in a positive mental space, suggesting a promising outlook for the next season.

Virat Kohli had an exceptional year, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer across formats with a total of 2,048 runs in 2023. The right-handed batter smashed eight centuries and recorded 10 half-centuries. He was the leading run-scorer in the 2023 World Cup.

The 35-year-old amassed a record-breaking 765 runs in 11 games at an impressive average of 95.62. The batter earned the Player of the Tournament title despite India’s loss to Australia in the final. He extended his form to the ongoing Test series against South Africa.

In a recently released ICC video, Nasser Hussain expressed confidence in Virat Kohli having another exceptional year in 2024. Hussain highlighted Kohli’s impressive batting technique and specifically mentioned his innings against Sri Lanka in the 2023 World Cup.

“My first one is a megastar and there is no doubt about it. Virat Kohli. He had a fantastic 2023 and World Cup. Amid all the records he broke and the attention, we did not focus on how well he was batting,” Hussain said.

“Technically, I have never seen Virat bat as well like that. The sound of the bat, that innings against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, I can name about five innings where he was getting in a good position. That is a good sign for Virat, India, and Virat fans. It means that he is in a good mental space and his game is in good order,” he added.

It Is A Massive Year For Babar Azam And Pakistan – Nasser Hussain

Nasser Hussain named former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam as his second choice for a successful 2024 campaign. Hussain emphasized the significance of Azam’s role in the upcoming year, particularly after relinquishing captaincy across all three formats.

“Another one, they are often compared. Babar Azam. I think it is a massive year for him and Pakistan. He has given up captaincy, that may be the weight off his shoulders,” said Hussain.

“The biggest thing he can do for Pakistan cricket is get shed load of runs. They need him to get runs. There will be a T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. They got to the finals last time. They will need their ex-skipper to put in a real performance,” he added.

Babar Azam had a strong start in the first half of 2023, but his performance saw a decline in the latter part of the year. He finished the year with a total of 1,399 runs across formats, maintaining an average of just under 40. He recorded three centuries in 35 games.

Babar stepped down from the leadership position following a disappointing campaign in the World Cup. The 38-year-old managed to score just 320 runs in nine matches in the tournament. The team failed to reach the semifinals, finishing in fifth place in the tournament.
