Bangladeshi cricketer Imrul Kayes has come in support of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan amidst former Indian opener Virender Sehwag's criticism. Imrul Kayes criticized Virender Sehwag for his comments that Shakib Al Hasan should "feel ashamed of his performances" and "retire from the format".
Virender Sehwag made remarks after Bangladesh's narrow loss to South Africa. Shakib Al Hasan scored just three runs off four deliveries and bowled just one over during the match. Shakib managed to score 8 runs in Bangladesh's World Cup opener and also went wicketless, giving away 30 runs in his three overs.
However, the left-handed batter scored his half-century against the Netherlands in St. Vincent on Thursday, June 13. Shakib scored an unbeaten 64 runs off 46 balls, hitting nine boundaries, and helped the team reach 159 runs. The 37-year-old was named "Player of the Match" in Bangladesh's 25-run victory.
Virender Sehwag Has Made Such Comments Throughout His Career - Imrul Kayes
In an interaction with Cricfrenzy, Imrul Kayes stated that legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid never spoke disrespectfully about others. Kayes said that Virender Sehwag lacks understanding of how to treat fellow players with respect, even during his playing career.
"I don't know how a legendary cricketer like him thinks when he says such things. You won't see Sachin-Dravid talking like this because they give that respect to players. Since he didn't get that respect in his career, he doesn't know how to give that respect to other players," Kayes said.
Imrul Kayes recalled Virender Sehwag's past criticism of Bangladesh, where he claimed the country lacked suitable cricketing conditions and couldn't take 20 wickets in Test matches. Kayes highlighted that Bangladesh has proven him wrong by achieving these feats in cricket, despite Sehwag's remarks.
"Different countries' cricketers evaluate other countries' cricketers differently. Virender Sehwag has made such comments throughout his career. He has also made such comments about our country, saying we don't have an environment suitable for cricket, and that we don't have the ability to take 20 wickets in Test cricket. But we did take those wickets," Kayes added.
Bangladesh is on track to qualify for the Super 8 stages of the marquee tournament. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led team secured two wins out of three matches in the group stage. To advance to the next stage of the tournament, they need to win their final match against Nepal in Kingstown on Sunday, June 16.
The Train Is Well Past The Platform - Virender Sehwag
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said that Shakib Al Hasan should retire from T20 cricket after this World Cup. Sehwag highlighted that Shakib doesn’t have impressive stats despite being a senior player.
“I knew in the last World Cup that his time is up in the T20I format. The train is well past the platform. He doesn’t have impressive stats. He is a senior player, and has been a former player - his numbers should embarrass him. He should say, ‘I am retiring from the T20I format."
Shakib Al Hasan is considered Bangladesh's most accomplished cricketer. The southpaw has amassed over 14,550 runs and taken 700 wickets across various formats throughout his illustrious international career.
