In a surprising twist after India’s 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa raised eyebrows with an interesting observation about head coach Gautam Gambhir.

India clinched the ODI series on the back of the incredible efforts of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, yet Gambhir did not mention either of the senior stars in the post-match press conference.

Kohli was the standout performer in the three-match ODI series, smashing 302 runs, including back-to-back centuries and an unbeaten 65 in the final game. The former Indian captain’s consistency made him the top performer and earned him the Player of the Series award.

On the other hand, Rohit was also in top touch, scoring 146 runs with two important fifties that helped India control pressure and build strong totals throughout the ODI series against the Proteas side at home.

Despite their huge contributions to India’s series win, neither Kohli’s nor Rohit’s performances were highlighted by Gambhir at the post-match presentation in Vishakhapatnam.

Gautam Gambhir ignoring RoKo's contributions, felt weird and strange: Robin Uthappa

Uthappa found it strange that such major contributions were overlooked by the Indian head coach. The cricket pundit has pointed out that both Rohit and Kohli played the kind of innings that carried India through pressure situations and were instrumental in the ODI series win.

Robin Uthappa said in a video posted on his YouTube channel, “What I found surprising is the post-match of the South Africa ODI series; in the press conference, I didn't see Gautam Gambhir giving credit to either Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, which just felt weird.

Here are a couple of guys who've batted out of their skins and shown us how good they are and how good they can be. They reduced all kinds of doubts and shut down any naysayers about what they actually can do and will do and will do for India when they are in the right kind of form. That felt strange.”

Gautam Gambhir silent on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's future as ICC World Cup 2027 talk heats up

After India’s ODI series win over South Africa last week, Gautam Gambhir refused to give clear answers when asked about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s roles in the ICC World Cup 2027. Even the Indian chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, remained silent on their chances to play at the mega event.

The head coach stressed that the tournament is still two years away and the focus should remain on the present. Gambhir made it clear that both players’ contributions in the 50-over format will remain important as India moves forward. Both are saying that the time will only clear things.

Gambhir signed off by saying, “First you got to realize that the ODI World Cup is two years away. It’s important to stay in the present. They are world-class players, and their experience is important in the dressing room. They’ve been doing it for a long time. Hopefully, they can continue doing the same, which is going to be important in the 50-over format.”

Notably, both Virat and Rohit are likely to return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy for their respective Delhi and Mumbai teams ahead of the ODI series against New Zealand at home in January.
