Former Team India keeper-batter Parthiv Patel pointed out some specific characteristics of Shubman Gill, who is now the captain of the Indian cricket team for Tests and ODIs, and the Gujarat Titans skipper in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Patel observed that Gill used to be very conservative and introverted before getting the Gujarat Titans leadership. With the extra added responsibility, Shubman Gill made some changes in his approach in front of the camera, at least.

Parthiv Patel was a guest on former India opener Aakash Chopra's YouTube podcast. Explaining Gill emerged as one of the major topics during the discussion. Patel expressed that it is among the duties of a captain to speak in support of the teammates. To speak out in front of the media, captains need to learn about the art of communication.
Before becoming the Gujarat Titans captain and then the Team India leader, Gill made some changes in his personality, and there was clarity in his mind about his role in the national team as well. While the top-order batter leads the team in Tests and ODIs, he is currently out of the T20I setup.

Patel further mentioned that Gill knows what he is doing and whether to prove himself in the shortest format of the game to make a return in Twenty20 cricket with the Indian cricket team.
"He is a little conservative. But if you want to captain, you have to be out there. Out there for the players also. That is the kind of effort you need to put in, and he has done that. I thought that he would want to prove himself after being dropped from the T20I side. But his thinking was like, if I have played 7-8 years of the IPL, why should I have the mindset that I have to keep proving myself constantly? That clarity is there," Patel said in a podcast with Aakash Chopra.

The former keeper-batter had very little idea how Shubman Gill is as a human being. After joining the Gujarat-based franchise as the assistant coach and batting coach, Parthiv Patel found that the skipper is respectful, hardworking, and making improvements.
"Just the way he is as a person. I did not know what kind of a person Gill is until I joined GT. He is someone who always wants to do well. He is respectful, hardworking, and just the way he conducts himself. He has clarity of thought and looks to carry himself and the team. There is no in-between. There is a lot of improvement from when he started as captain," Parthiv Patel stated in the same video.
Gill played a key role in Gujarat Titans’ maiden title in 2022 and followed it with a sensational 890-run season in 2023, including three centuries. In the previous two seasons, the batter scored 650 and 732 runs rn 2025 and 2026 seasons, respectively. In 2024, he collected 426 runs for the Titans.
