Jonny Bairstow has opened up about his international future with the England National Cricket Team after playing a stunning knock in the ongoing The Hundred 2025. Jonny Bairstow is currently playing for the Welsh Fire in the ongoing 100-ball tournament at home.

Bairstow played a stunning knock of 86 unbeaten runs off 50 balls laced with six boundaries and as many sixes while opening for Welsh Fire, but that was not enough, as the London Spirit managed to win the game by eight runs at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Saturday, August 9.

Jonny Bairstow's fireworks fall short for Welsh Fire in The Hundred 2025

Welsh Fire’s chase of 164 looked all but over at 55 for 6, but Bairstow and Chris Green steadied the innings before mounting a late charge. After the top and middle order’s failure, Bairstow and Green have stitched an unbeaten 100-run partnership off 53 balls to keep the game alive in Cardiff.

Coming to bat at No. 8, Green played a handy knock of 32* runs off 21 balls, but his and the England wicketkeeper-batter’s late fireworks ended just short, with Welsh Fire falling short of just eight runs in the 6th match of the ongoing The Hundred 2025 at the Sophia Gardens.

Jonny Bairstow uncertain about England future

After the match in Cardiff on Saturday, Jonny Bairstow admitted that he is not sure about his comeback to the international arena in England colors. Bairstow told BBC Sports, “Look, if an England recall comes, that comes, but I think it's doubtful, judging by the fact I've not really heard too much.”

Earlier, David Warner played a stunning knock of 70* to help London Spirit post 163/5 on the board in 100 balls. Later, Warner was named Player of the Match for his excellent batting show in The Hundred clash against the Welsh Fire at the Sophia Gardens.

England’s early bazball star Jonny Bairstow awaits recall

Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow has been sidelined from England. He last played a T20I game for England on June 27, 2024, against India in the T20 World Cup semifinal, while his last ODI appearance came in the 2023 World Cup group stage against Pakistan at Eden Gardens.

Bairstow last played a Test match in March 2024 against India at Dharamsala. It was his 100th Test match, making him only the 17th player in history to reach that landmark. Bairstow has never had a fixed role in England’s Test setup throughout his career.

However, when England embraced the aggressive “Bazball” style, Bairstow thrived instantly, becoming one of its early heroes in 2022. His fearless batting helped England to validate their famous approach in the longest format of the game.

Most recently, Bairstow turned out for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. In two matches, he scored 85 runs after replacing fellow England batter Will Jacks.

Notably, Welsh Fire are yet to open their account in the ongoing The Hundred 2025, losing their first two games. They are currently sitting in sixth in the points table, while Oval Invincibles leads the standings with 8 points from 2 games that they have won so far in the 100-ball tournament.
