While many remember Greg Chappell’s tenure as India head coach to be one of the most volatile ones, it also gave the Indian team some gems of cricketers who served the team for a long time, and former India captain MS Dhoni was one of them.
Dhoni made his debut for India in 2004 under the regime of Sourav Ganguly and John Wright and went on to become of the mega-stars of the Indian cricket world. However, he began showing glimpses of the ‘finisher’ in him during the Rahul Dravid-Greg Chappell era. Later he captained India for well over a decade, winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy, and the 2011 World Cup for India.
MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, playing 90 Tests, 350 ODIs, and 98 T20Is for India, with his last outing coming in the heartbreaking semi-final loss to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup in England.
MS Dhoni Developed The Decision-Making And Strategic Skills By Competing Against More Experienced Individuals: Greg Chappell
Greg Chappell has always talked highly of MS Dhoni and recently singled out one trait of the former captain which made him stand out from others. By taking chances early in his career, Chappell underlines how Dhoni sharpened himself to become one of the world’s all-time greats.
“MS Dhoni, with whom I worked in India, is a good example of a batter who developed his talent and learned to play in this fashion. By competing against more experienced individuals on a variety of surfaces early in his development, Dhoni developed the decision-making and strategic skills that have set him apart from many of his peers. His is one of the sharpest cricket minds I have encountered,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNCricinfo.
With Chappell as a coach, Dhoni refined into one of the most explosive batters. His innings of 183 not out against Sri Lanka, unbeaten and 72 not out in Pakistan and an explosive 96 against England are some of the highlight knocks of his early career.
MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the sharpest cricketing brains in cricket, and many bowlers have credited the former keeper-batter for their success as he guided them from behind the stumps.
