An unusual moment took place during the third and final T20I match between West Indies and Pakistan, sparking interest among fans and cricket experts. West Indies middle-order batter Roston Chase became the first player from a Full Member nation to be 'retired out' in a men’s T20 International.
Pakistan chose to bat first after winning the toss in the third T20I against the West Indies at Central Broward Park in Florida. Openers Saim Ayub (66 off 49) and Sahibzada Farhan (74 off 53) laid the foundation with a 138-run stand. Their performances helped Pakistan post a competitive total of 189/4 in their 20 overs.
Roston Chase Retires Out in 3rd T20I Against Pakistan
Roston Chase became the first player from a Full Member nation to be retired out in a men’s T20 International. The incident occurred during the 18th over of the West Indies' run chase.
With 41 runs needed from 18 balls, Chase, who was struggling on 15 off 12 deliveries, decided to walk off the field. He failed to find the boundary consistently, managing just two in his brief innings. The West Indies management opted to send in the big-hitting Jason Holder to finish the match.
This tactical call reflects a growing trend in modern cricket, where teams are willing to make bold decisions to maximize their chances in the final overs. However, the West Indies couldn’t chase down the 190-run target set by Pakistan.
Roston Chase Becomes First Full Member Player to Retire Out in Men’s T20I
Roston Chase’s 'retired out' in the T20I against Pakistan is just the 12th such instance in men’s T20Is, and only the second involving a Full Member nation. The last incident came during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Namibia cricketer Nikolaas Davin walked off against England after a slow start in a rain-shortened chase. The other ten retire-outs have occurred exclusively in matches between Associate nations.
Notably, Chase had already encountered a similar situation in franchise cricket. While playing for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20 earlier this year, he was retired out after scoring 20 off 13 balls in the death overs, having failed to accelerate.
Pakistan Seal 13-Run Victory to Complete 2-1 Series Win
The Windies showed intent in their chase of 190 but struggled to maintain momentum as wickets fell at crucial stages. Alick Athanaze (60) and Sherfane Rutherford (51) chipped in with half-centuries. The hosts finished on 176/6, falling 13 runs short. Pakistan sealed a 13-run win and clinched the T20I series 2-1.
"Firstly, I must commend the bowlers for their effort that they put in for the entire series. It was a little more conducive for strokeplay today. Still felt 190 would have been enough for us to chase. We speak about execution with the ball a lot, we've seen progression, we just need to be a little more consistent," West Indies skipper Shai Hope said after the loss.
