Hobart Hurricanes destroy Perth Scorchers to claim maiden WBBL title

Hobart Hurricanes ended their long wait for a WBBL trophy with a dominant win over the Perth Scorchers in the 2025 final at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Saturday, December 13. After topping the league stage, the Hurricanes carried that momentum into the title clash and finally lifted their first WBBL title in 11 years.
South African star Lizelle Lee single-handedly guided the Hobart Hurricanes to their first-ever WBBL crown. She scored an unbeaten 77 off 44 balls, dismantled the Perth Scorchers’ attack, and powered the Hurricanes to an emphatic eight-wicket win. They completed the 138-run chase with five overs to spare.

The Hobart Hurricanes won their first-ever championship in a dominant performance against the Perth Scorchers. Their victory also came in the same year the Hurricanes’ men’s team won the BBL.
Lizelle Lee began aggressively by hitting three boundaries in the very first over and never allowed the bowlers to settle. She recorded the highest score in a WBBL final and her best innings of the season. The batter smashed 10 fours and four sixes, putting the Scorchers under huge pressure.
Lee first added 49 runs with Danni Wyatt-Hodge and then built a match-winning 77-run stand with Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored 35. Perth’s leg-spinner Alana King was unable to stop the flow of runs and went for 25 in just two overs.

Earlier, Pthe erth Scorchers chose to bat first but never gained momentum. Hobart Hurricanes dropped a few catches, but Perth could not take full advantage. Beth Mooney was given three chances in the powerplay and scored 33 runs before Heather Graham bowled her in the 11th over.
Sophie Devine also tried to rebuild the innings. She started slowly, then hit two sixes, but was stumped in the 17th over just when the team needed her to continue. Perth struggled to build any big partnerships.
Hobart’s bowlers kept things tight throughout the innings. Heather Graham picked up two key wickets and Linsey Smith bowled an excellent spell, giving away very few runs and taking 2 for 4 in just two overs. Paige Scholfield helped Perth reach 137 for 5, but it was a below-par score. after a slow and difficult start.

Hurricanes captain Elyse Villani admitted that she had prepared two different speeches for the big night. Villani added a lighthearted request not to judge her for planning ahead, saying the moment was too significant for the team to leave anything to chance.
"Before I sound like a flog, I actually have two versions of this speech, but I was hoping that I'd only have to read this one out, and I just thought it was best to be prepared as it's our first final and it's a huge occasion for our organisation no matter what happens tonight. So I'm glad I'm reading this one, but please don't think ill of me."
